Je viens d'apprendre un bien triste nouvelle, le chanteur jamaicain Alton Ellis est mort à Londres le week-end dernier. Il restera à toujours lié au rocksteady avec son groupe The Flames et au reggae-soul avec selon moi la plus belle voix du reggae avec Horace Andy.
I just know a sad news, the Jamaican singer Alton Ellis is dead in London last week-end. He will forever be associated to rocksteady with his band The Flames and reggae-soul music. He had according to me the most beautiful voice of reggae (with Horace Andy).
Qualifier le duo anglais Chase & Status d'opportunistes serait un raccourci tant leur précédentes productions de Drum'n Bass m'avaient plu. Malheureusement à l'écoute de leur nouvel album "More Than Alot", j'en sors déçu, du dubstep par ci, de la dark drum'n bass par là ou encore de la jungle très old school. Tout ceci est trop décousu (et même d'un niveau moyen, il faut bien l'avouer). A l'exception du morceau sur lequel rappe Kano, "Against All Odds", du funk pur et dur à la Curtis Mayfield avec un beat endiablé et un sample vocale qui déchire (passez moi l'expression !).
To qualify the English duet Chase & Status would be a short cut because of their previous drum'n bass productions I liked so much. Unfortunatly when you listen to their new album "More Than Alot", I feel disappointed, some dubstep tracks on one hand, dark drum'n bass on the other hand and some old-school jungle. The result sounds disjointed (and I must admit the level is mediocre). One exception: the track "Against All Odds" featuring MC Kano, some pure funk as Curtis Mayfield's one, with a devil beat and a fucking good vocal sample.
J'avais découvert la MC californienne Kid Sister grâce à son featuring sur le morceau "Beeper" de The Count & Sinden puis sur son premier EP "Pro Nails" produit par A-Track avec un featuring de Kanye West. Le bizutage passé, il était temps de passer au format album avec "Dream Date" et de faire appel aux meilleurs producteurs actuels, les mêmes que ceux de Mia et Santogold. Comme Diplo qui lui offre un tube funky imparable "Family Reunion" accompagné de David Banner. Nous avions eu dans les années 90 Faith Evans et l'hymne "Love Like This", pour les années 2000, ce sera "Family Reunion". Qui veut parier ?

Such as Diplo who offers her a great funky track "Family Reunion" featured David Banner. We had in the 90's Faith Evans and her anthem "Love Like This", in the 00's, it gonna be "Family Reunion". C'est l'un des principaux événements de cette fin d'année, Mr Scruff sort un nouvel album ! Celui qui fut dès l'origine de l'aventure Ninja Tune aux côtés de Coldcut, revient avec "Ninja Tuna" qui est aussi le nom de son nouveau propre label lui même rattaché à Ninja Tune. A l'image de ses mixes pour l'émission Solid Steel, ce LP est varié, un cocktail de styles allant du jazz au hip-hop en passant par la soul avec bidouillages techniques et invités prestigieux. Cinq fois recommandés comme les 5 fruits par jour à manger. La musique, un fruit bon pour sa santé ! C'est démontré dans le clip de "Music Takes Me Up" sur lequel chante la géniallissime chanteuse Alice Russell. Mangez des pommes comme disait l'autre !
It's one of the biggest release of this end of 2008, a new album of Mr Scruff ! The guy who was with Coldcut at the beginning of Ninja Tune, is coming back with "Ninja Tuna" which is too the name of his own new label which is connected with Ninja Tune (!!). Sounding like his mixes of the radioshow Solid teel, this LP is varied, a cocktail of music styles, from jazz to hip-hop and soul music, full of technics, samples and prestigious featurings. 5 times recommanded like the 5 fruits per day to eat. Music is a fruit good for health! As demonstrated in the music video of the track "Music Takes Me Up", on which sings the genius Alice Russel.
Est-il nécessaire de présenter Jeff Mills ? Certainement pas. Mais je ne pouvais laisser l'occasion d'en parler avec la réédition de son maxi "Divine" car la face B "Changes Of Life (Reprise Mix)" est pour moi un morceau magique de techno où la simplicité de production accentue la beauté d'une inspiration quasi divine.
Is it necessary to present Jeff Mills ? Of course not. But I take the opportunity to mention him thanks to the reedition of his EP "Divine" because the face B "Changes Of Life (Reprise Mix)" is, according to me, a magical techno track. The simplicity of production accentuates the beauty of this divine inspiration.
Vous avez certainement remarqué mon amour inconditionnel pour Italians Do It Better et tous les artistes qu'il comporte, pour beaucoup avec derrière le talentueux Johnny Jewel. Dont les Chromatics que j'avais chroniqués il y a quelques mois. Le charme de leur nu-disco teinté de dark pop fait travailler notre imaginaire et donne des idées à des internautes de réaliser par exemple un clip pour le morceau "Hands In The Dark", non officiel mais recommandé par le groupe et par moi-même !
You maybe notice my inconditionnal love for Italians Do It Better and all its artists. Especially The Chromatics I made a review few months ago. The charm of their nu-disco with dark pop make our imagination working and gives ideas to people to realize for exemple a music video for the track "Hands In The Dark", non-official but recommanded by the band and by myself!
Le label indé californien Delicious Vinyl créé par Michael Ross et Matt Dike a joué un rôle essentiel dans mon amour pour le hip-hop. Bobby Evans, The Pharcyde, Young MC, Masta Ace ou encore Fatlip m'ont marqué et l'annonce depuis quelques mois d'une compilation en l'honneur du label m'avait rendu impatient. "Delicious Vinyl All-Stars Rmxxology" est un recueil de remixes faits par des producteurs que j'adore en plus. Don Rimini, Breakbot, Aaron Lacrate, Debonair Samir, Hot Chip ou encore Diplo ont ainsi rendu un hommage original, bien actual et vraiment top. Pour l'illustrer, celui de Diplo avec le titre de Young MC "Bust A Move".
The independant hip-hop label, Delicious Vinyl founded by Michael Roos and Matt Dike was essential in my life and the love of hip-hop. Bobby Evans, The Pharcyde, Young MC, Masta Ace or Fatlip let forever a print in my mind and memory. Few month ago the announcement of a compilation dedicated to the label made me impatient. "Delicious Vinyl All-Stars Rmxxology" is a LP of remixes recorded by producers I like so much. Don Rimini, Breakbot, Aaron Lacrate, Debonair Samir, Hot Chip, among others present an nowadays original and great homage. To illustrate it, let's take the Diplo's one with the track of Young MC "Bust A Move".
Après Rasta Rocket, ou les Jamaicains aux JO d'hiver, nous avons eu le droit à Usain Bolt aux JO d'été. Ce sprinteur a écrasé tous ses concurrent au sens propre comme au figuré. Chambreur, showman mais si fort. Cela méritait bien une petite chanson en l'honneur de celui que toute une nation insulaire vénère. C'est Dennis Alcapone qui s'y colle avec "Usain Bolt Of Lightning". Longue vie au roi du sprint !
After Rasta Rocket or Jamaicans at winter olympic games, we had Usain Bolt at summer olympic games. This sprinter flew over his competitors. A so strong showman who teases. It deserved a song in favour of the one that whole island nation venerates. Dennis Alcapone recorded one, "Usain Bolt Of Lightning". God bless the King of sprint!
Quand Gilles Peterson lance un label, c'est une assurance qualité que l'on obtient. 15 ans après Talkin' Loud, Brownswood Recordings réussit tout : de artistes en devenir des 4 coins de la planète (Japon, USA, Anglais...), des albums à écouter et réécouter, des maxis qui valent le détour grâce à une sélection de remixeurs toujours excellente. Le chanteur compositeur new-yorkais Jose James dont l'album "The Dreamer" est à découvrir d'urgence, revient avec deux de ses titres remixés, un par Moodyman et le second par Ben Westbeech qui est tout bonnement magique, une relecture inattendue de la part du Bristolien qui nous avait caché ses talents de producteur de deep house. Une belle surprise autant qu'une certitude que l'anglais est autant un surdoué qu'un touche-à-tout.
When Gilles Peterson founds a record label, it is an insurance of quality we acquire. 15 years after Talkin' Loud, Brownswood Recordings achieves all : of potential artists from all over the world (Japan, USA, England), albums to listened and re-listen, always interesting EPs thanks to a nice selection of remixers. The singer/composer from New York, Jose James, whose album "The Dreamer" is urgently to discover, comes back with two of his tracks remixed, one by Moodyman and the other one by Ben Westbeech, which is simply magical, an unforeseen cover of the Bristol musician who hides his producer's talents of deep house music. A nice surprise as much as a certainty that the English man is exceptionally gifted.
L'été est terminé, des souvenirs pleins la tête pour patienter les 9 prochains mois avant de le retrouver sur un fond musical dédié que j'ai mixé en m'inspirant de chaque moment où le soleil, la chaleur, le sable euphorisaient.
Summer is over, many souvenirs in the mind for waiting during the next 9 months before its coming-back with a dedicated soundtrack I mixed wwith an inspiration of each moment when sun, heath, sand made you exhilarating.
Je n'avais pas eu l'occasion de parler du duo de Ratatat alors que leur album "LP3" est certainement un des meilleurs albums de l'année 2008. Ce troisième opus est aussi comme les précédents énigmatique, rempli de bidouillages, guitare et synthé mais je le trouve plus réjouissant. A l'image du dernier clip pour le titre "Shempi" que je vous laisse découvrir (clin d'oeil à la poule à facette, elle se reconnaîtra !).
I did not have time to talk about the californian Ratatat even if their album "LP3" is for sure one of the best album of 2008. This third album is as the the previous ones, really enigmatic, full of tweaks, guitar and keyboards but I think this one is more delightful. As the last music video of the track "Shempi" you can discover now.
Nouvelle bombe made in Institubes, fameux label français : Para One, Teki Latex, Curses!, Tacteel sans oublier Bobmo et mon chouchou Surkin. Justement ces deux derniers (je crois les benjamins de l'écurie Institubes) s'associent pour un nouveau projet, High Powered Boys. Au programme de la ghettotech, forme de musique électronique typique des années 2000, une électro qui rassemble influence des DJ Funk, des nineties et Daft Punk. Je suis toujours sous le charme malgré les dizaines d'écoutes de "Hoes Get Down", témoin en moi d'une part de nostalgie, de la réalité d'aujourd'hui. Serait-ce une certaine vision d'avenir ?
A new bomb made in Institubes, famous French label : Para One, Teki Latex, Curses!, Tacteel without forgetting Bobmo and my fabvourite one, Surkin. The program : ghettotech, form of electronic music typical of 00's, an electro which gathers influence of DJ Funk, nineties and Daft Punk. Despite of dozens listenings, I am always under the spell of "Hoes Get Down", witness in me on nostalgia and on today's reality. Would it be a vision of future?
J'avais perdu de vue la chanteuse américaine, Nikka Costa, qui avait ouvert la voix aux succès des Amy Winehouse, Duffy et consors. C'est avec son single "Like A Feather"que j'avais plongé dans cette soul traditionnelle et modernisée à la fois. On retrouve les mêmes ingrédients sur son nouveau single "Stuck To You" qui annonce un nouvel album qui sortira sur Stax Records, "Pebble To A Pearl". A suivre de prêt !
I forgot to follow news about american singer, Nikka Costa, who opened the way for the success of soul women such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy, among others. It was with her single "Like A Feather" that I go into this traditional and modernized soul music. We find the same receipts on her new EP "Stuck To You" which announces a new album, "Pebble To A Pearl, on Stax Records. Follow up!
Les vies atypiques m'ont toujours plu. Celle d'Arto Mwambe en fait une. Cet africain a quitté le continent de son enfance pour rejoindre l'Angleterre et faire de la musique, de la techno plus exactement. Etonnante trajectoire pour ce producteur à la musique speed, "dirty" et finalement basique. Quoiqu'il en soit, c'est un pur talent et son track "Btwo" issu de son dernier maxi "Ouverture Antenne" l'illustre à la perfection.
Atypical lifes always fascinate me. Arto Mwambe's life is one of them. This African guy left the continent of his childhood, went to England to make music, techno music more precisely. Amazing trajectory for this producer of speed, dirty and finally basic music. Whatever his style, it is a pure talent and his track " Btwo " of his last EP "Ouverture Antenne" represents it perfectly.
Le 20 Septembre (donc demain), je serai dans un nouveau bar du quartier Oberkampf, le Pili Pili. Nouveau lieu, donc nouvelle soirée que j'intitule Close2Friends, ceux qui viendront comprendront.

Continuons notre tour du monde musical ! Après l'Afrique du Sud, les USA, petit arrêt au Japon pour vous parler de Hajime Yoshizawa, un de mes producteurs favoris de nu-jazz, broken-beat. Celui qui m'a conquis avec l'album qu'il avait produit pour Isabelle Antena (magnifique chanteuse française) se voit réédité pour le continent européen de ses maxis les plus marquants. Le EP "European Edition Volume 1" est incontournable. Chaque titre, chaque remix sont aussi accrocheurs qu'apaisants. Je dois en retenir un, et ce sera le remix de Jimpster de "Endless Bow", tout bonnement génial !
Let's continue our worldwide musical trip! After South Africa, The USA, a stop-over in Japan to present you Hajime Yoshizawa, one of my favourite nu-jazz and broken-beat producer. The one who won me with the album he produced for the splendid French signer Isabelle Antena, has the right to be reissued for the European continent of his most notable Eps. The EP "European Edition Volume 1" is inevitable. Every track, every remix are as attracting as comforting. If I must keep one, I would select the Jimpster's remix of "Endless Bow", simply brilliant!
Je suis de la génération bercé par le hip-hop des années 90, celui entre autre de Tribe Called Quest. Je suis et resterai un inconditionnel du flow, du style de Q-Tip qui m'a tant marqué à l'époque. Son album solo, "The Renaissance", va bientôt sortir et il s'annonce grandiose. Les samples sont tous bien sentis et le premier single "Gettin' Up" offre un aperçu de cet air de joie que délivre Q-Tip. Du hip-hop soul bien relevé emmené par un Q-Tip travesti en un mi-Davy Crockett (chapeau à queue), mi-Michael Jackson (veste militaire rouge).
I am from the generation who listened to Nineties hip-hop, the one of Tribe Called Quest. I am and will be a fan of the flow, of the style of Q-Tip who "marked" my mind at this time. His solo album, "The Renaissance", is going to be out soon and it sounds excellent. Samples are all well selected and the first single "Gettin' Up" gives us a vision of this happy air that Q-Tip distributes. An uptempo soul hip-hop with a Q-Tip dressep up in half Davy Crockett (hat) and half Michael Jackson (red jacket).
Encore une histoire de choriste qui avait tellement de talent qu'elle a fini par percer, c'est celle de Stephanie McKay, chanteuse du Bronx qui a travaillé sur des projets prestigieux tels que ceux de Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky ou encore Roy Hargrove. Elle eut même la chance d'avoir des producteurs dont beaucoup rêvent, Geoff Barrow de Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna. Ce mois-ci sort un second album, "Tell It Like It Is", de celle que j'avais découvert avec le titre "Take Me Over", sorti sur Grand Central (à écouter d'urgence). L'album est influencé autant par la soul que le funk rock des années 70 ainsi que le hip-hop, à travers notamment un message social omniprésent et c'est un vrai régal. Ceux qui recherchent par lassitude une autre Estelle, ne cherchez pas plus loin (je la trouve encore meilleure !).
One more story about a chorist who had enought talent to get her own career. It's the one of StephanieMcKay, Bronx native singer, who worked on pretigious projects sur as ones of Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky ou encore Roy Hargrove. She had the luck to work on her own project with famous producers such as Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna. This mounth is released the second album, "Tell It Like It Is", of the woman I discovered thanks to the song "Take Me Over", out on Grand Central Label (Liten to it urgently!). This album is influenced by soul music, seventies funk-rock and hip-hop, through a omnipresent social message. I love this album. For those who search an other Estelle (because your're fed up with), here is the solution (I think McKay is better than her!)
C'est par inspiration hasardeuse que je me suis renseigné sur Internet sur la scène musicale sud-africaine. Pourquoi ? Aucune idée. Pour quel résultat ? Une bonne surprise qui s'appelle Kentphonik, soit 2 musiciens producteurs de musique house. Oui oui, il y a bien de la musique house made in Afrique du Sud, vraiment excellente, que Kent et Tumi tentent depuis 3 ans de développer. Très inspiré par la house de New York, Kentphonik cultive une particularité typiquement africaine pour se démarquer, utilisant notamment les timbres de voix féminines locales comme celle de Khensy sur "Hiya Kaya", morceau empreint d'un romantisme avec une déclaration d'amour touchante. En écoute le remix Rocco Deep qui m'a emballé.
It is by an hazardous inspiration I searched on the web about south african musical scene. Pourquoi? No idea. For what result? A good surprise called Kentphonik, 2 musicians and house music producers. Yes yes, there is a lot of house made in music Southern Africa, really good, that Kent and Tumi have been trying to develop for 3 years. Very inspired by NYC house, Kentphonik cultivates a typical african singularity, notably by using female local voices as the one of Khensy on "Hiya Kaya", a track imprints of a Romanticism with a lovely statement. You listen the Rocco Deep remix, my favourite one.
C'est la rentrée et la reprise de toutes les habitudes, refaire son cartable, tailler ses crayons, mettre sa nouvelle tenue vestimentaire, retrouver les copains, les connaissances et écouter la compil' de la rentrée. Au menu de 2008, toujours de l'éclectisme, toujours de l'inédit avec un soupçon de surprises car même les traditions et habitudes ont le droit de receler de surprises. Alors bon courage à tous et bonne écoute.
It's a come-back to real life and the restart of all habits, to prepare your satchel, to sharpen your pencils, to wear your new clothes, to see again your friends you leave and to listen to the compilation of Rentrée. In the menu of 2008, always eclecticism, always rare stuff with a suspicion of surprises because even traditions and habits have the right to conceal surprises.
