Cela fait des années que je suis Niko, une américaine de Seattle qui, comme Natalie Williams (ma toute première chronique), a étudié la musique contemporaine et le jazz. Après avoir fondé son propre groupe à New York, elle s'envole en Angleterre pour signer sur Grand Central Records de Mark Rae, ce qui lui ouvre la porte de producteurs anglais dont notamment Mr Scruff ou Riton. Elle sort ainsi en 2004 un premier album de haute volée, 'Life On Earth', qui démontre son talent aussi à l'aise sur des breakbeats nerveux que sur des mélodies mélancoliques.
Sa renommée, elle le doit à un titre inoubliable 'Don't Waste Your Time', ballade langoureuse à écouter d'urgence pour ceux qui ne la connaissent pas. Puis elle part en tournée avec AIM, autre signature de Grand Central. A son retour elle se retrouve approchée par Atic, tout nouveau label créé justement par AIM. Véritable soul woman, elle possède une voix teintée d'expressions intimistes qui colle parfaitement au registre de soul dépouillée d'artifice. Niko est un mélange exquis d'une Erykah Badu pour l'influence black music et d'une Beth Gibbons pour la sensibilité et le charisme vocal. Elle sort très prochainement un album encore sans titre et produit par AIM (encore eux !) qui s'annonce passionnant. Comment résister à cette déesse métisse japonaise-espagnole !
Le timbre de Niko est si mélodieux qu'il magnifie les instrumentaux sur lesquelles elle imprime son charisme vocal ravageur comme sur 'Womb' qui est une véritable perle, vous savez une de ces chansons qui vous laisse un goût délicieux dans la bouche au point de devenir gourmand et d'en reprendre encore et encore sans risque d'indigestion !
For couple of years I have been attending Niko, an American woman from Seattle who, like Natalie Williams (my first review), studied the contemporary and jazz music. After founding her own band in New York, she flied away in England to sign on Grand Central Records of Rae Mark, which gave her the opportunity to work with some English producers as Mr Scruff and Riton. She released in 2004 her excellent first album, 'Life One Earth', which demonstrated her talent which applies to any kind of music such as breakbeat, hip-hop music.
She owes her fame thanks to an unforgettable track 'Don't Waste Your Time', languorous ballade to listen urgently for those who do not know it. Then she went on tour with AIM, another signature of Grand Central. After it, she signed on Atic, a new label founded by AIM. As a true soul woman, she has a vocal tone full of intimist expressions, which sticks perfectly to the style of a soul stripped of tricks. Niko is a delightful mix of Erykah Badu for the black music influence and of Beth Gibbons for the sensitivity and the vocal charisma. She 's gonna release very soon her second yet untitled album produced by AIM (still them !) which looks enthralling. How to resist to this half Japanese & half Spanish goddess!
The whispering timbre of Niko is so melodious that it glorifies any instrumentals on which she imparts her devastating vocal sensibility as on 'Womb' which is a real pearl, you know one of these songs which leaves you a delicious taste in your mouth, so delicious that you become greedy and take more and more without any risk of indigestion!
