Le mélange trip-hop, rock et abstract hip-hop est né il y a 10 ans grâce aux productions du défunt label Cup Of Tea. Notamment à travers le duo Monk & Canatella qui vient d'annoncer un nouvel album (Bonne nouvelle !), ou plus récemment le dernier album de DJ Shadow et ses penchants pop et rock. Un nouveau venu est Stateless, groupe de pop à la base, basé à Leeds tout comme Kidkanevil (chroniqué il y a quelques semaines), producteur d'abstract hip-hop et connaissance du groupe (tiens tiens !!). De là à penser qu'après Bristol dans les années 90, c'est Leeds qui reprend le flambeau pour les années 2000.
Après deux premiers maxis "Bloodstream" et "Exit", Stateless se positionne en plein post-Radiohead, un pop-rock apocalyptique, autant imprégné par les mélodies faciles comme tout groupe typiquement anglais que par les expérimentations sonores technologiques d'Aphex Twin et autres. Leur premier album sort avec à la production le non moins réputé Jim Abbiss qui s'est occupé entre autre de l'album des Artic Monkeys. Le résultat est autant ambitieux qu'excellent. Les guitares se mêlent à des orchestrations électroniques tantôt dépouillées, tantôt grandioses. On redécouvre l'enchevêtrement entre rock, scratchs (d'un certain DJ Shadow) et breaks abstract hip-hop (de Kidkanevil entre autre) qui donne un aspect transcendant aux compositions de la dernière signature du label berlinois Studio K7. Que vous soyez fans de Radiohead ou Portishead ou Coldplay, vous élirez certainement l'opus "Stateless" d'album de l'année.
L'album démarre par "Prism", un titre sublime, rêveur, épique et intime qui parlera aux âmes de chaque auditeur. Tel ce combat que se livre cette boucle de piano aux rythmes musclés proche de la drum & bass. Magistral.

In particular through the duet Monk & Canatella who has just announced a new album (Good news!), or more recently the last album of DJ Shadow and his pop and rock'n'roll inclinations. A new comer is Stateless, pop band based in Leeds just like Kidkanevil (reviewed a few weeks ago), producer of abstract hip-hop and friend of Stateless. After Bristol in the Nineties, Leeds seems to be the place for the years 2000.
After the 2 first EPs “Bloodstream” and “Exit”, Stateless positions into post-Radiohead, an apocalyptic pop-rock'n'roll, impregnated as much by the easy melodies like any typically English band than by the technological sound experiments of Aphex Twin and others. Their first album releases with the production of the famous Jim Abbiss who was in charge of the Artic Monkeys' album. The result is as much ambitious as excellent. The guitars are involved in electronic orchestrations, sometimes stripped, sometimes imposing. you will rediscover the tangle between rock'n'roll, turntablism (of DJ Shadow) and abstract hip-hop hip-hop (of Kidkanevil) amongst other things which give an transcending aspect to the compositions of the last signature of the Berliner label Studio K7. Even if you are fan of Radiohead or Portishead or Coldplay, you will elect for sure the opus “Stateless” of album of the year 2007.
