Marco Polo n'est ni explorateur ni portugais. C'est en fait un producteur canadien de hip-hop. Il a émigré à New York où en 4 ans il a réussi à faire son trou collaborant avec de nombreux artistes tels que Heltah Skeltah, Large Professor, Buckshot, O.C. ou encore EMC. Devenant ainsi l'un des producteurs les plus en vue.
C'est donc avec intérêt croissant que j'attendais le premier album de Marco Polo. Et "Port Authority" est à la hauteur de mes espoirs placés en lui. Sorti sur Rawkus Records, l'album du canadien est le fruit de trois années de travail, trois années de la vie new yorkaise du beatmaker. C'est du hip-hop east-coast, un album aux beats lourds sur lequel on retrouve de véritables légendes du rap tel que Kool G Rap, Buckshot, Large Professor, Sadat X, les Beatnuts ainsi que des MCs issus de la nouvelle scène underground new yorkaise comme Copywrite, Jo Jo Pellegrino, ou encore Supastition. "Relax" et son influence Tribe Called Quest, l'ode à la cigarette jamaicaine "Rolling", les désormais incontournables "War", "The Wrong One" et "Go Around" sont des perles qui expliquent les critiques élogieuses et offrent la possibilité à Marco Polo d'assouvoir une réputation déjà exceptionnelle.
"Nostalgia" est un morceau de rap à l'ancienne comme je l'aime tant. Masta Ace délivre des paroles justement pleine de nostalgie qui permet de se remémorer l'époque des B-Boys, du ghetto blaster et tout ce qui allait avec. L'instru est fantastique, composé d'un sample mélodique de guitare tout droit sorti d'un funk au ralenti des seventies. La créativité au service du souvenir !
