Le duo français Outlines composé de Irfane et son meilleur pote, Jerome "Slim" Hadey est voué à se faire une belle place dans le gotha musical européen. Deux bidouilleurs passionnés, deux inconditionnels de musique (notamment de jazz et de hip-hop) et de sampling, qui sont au centre d'un buzz justifié. L'album sort, alors déception ou confirmation ?
Rencontrés en 2002, les membres Outlines ont un parcours aussi incroyable que hasardeux voire chanceux. Un sample fantastique de Sarah Vaugahn sera la base de leur premier titre "Just A Lil' Lovin' ", morceau d'acid-jazz d'une beauté et d'un feeling incroyables. Ce morceau leur ouvre les portes du label de Jazzonova, Sonar Kollektiv. S'en suivent quelques maxis, des remix dont le très remarqué "Lucky Boy" de DJ Mehdi. L'album "Our Lives Are Too Short" vient de sortir avec une production musicale, des arrangements ultra-léchés et s'avère aussi ambitieux qu'abouti, aussi varié que de qualité. Outlines déroule un hip-hop funky du 3ème millénaire avec des accents de broken beat et surtout un sens de la mélodie bien rare en ces temps. "How It Should Be Done" rappellera les productions de Marc Ronson et Amy Winehouse. Aux côtés d'Irfane qui pousse la chansonnette, vous découvrirez des featurings de RZA du Wu-Tang Clan (rien que cela) sur "Now That I’m Free" et Abl al Malik sur "Too Much To Ask". Mais aussi les amis d'Outlines, le groupe français Beat Assaillant qui évolue dans un univers proche, de nu-jazz et hip-hop, invités sur deux titres très réussis "Show Me" et "Waiting In Line". Jetez-vous dessus, vous ne serez pas déçus.
Les deux compères ont un don pour capter l'attention auditive exploitant aussi bien des samples accrocheurs dès la première seconde que des subtilités quelles soit rythmiques, mélodiques, sonores ou techniques. "Listen To The Drums (Clignancourt Edit)" est un mélange de toutes ces subtilités où un synthétiseur vrombissant appuie l'hypnose de tous les kicks et toms utilisés pour un break imparable. Fascinant !
