Le vétéran Nookie est de retour. C'est une bonne nouvelle pour la scène drum & bass de voir réapparaître celui qui se cachait aussi derrière Cloud Nine, Second Vision, New Balance entre autre. Celui qui considère que la musique est à décomposer en 2 clans, la bonne et la mauvaise, est un pilier de la Drum & Bass made in UK qui touche aussi au hip-hop avec son groupe Illegal Pressure mais aussi à la house et la lounge avec le titre incontournable qu'est "Paradise" (Compilation Café Del Mar). Nookie est un esthète de la musique qui gère d'une main de maître sa carrière depuis le début des années 90.
Dès "Give A Little Love", Nookie est catapulté sur le devant de la scène. Son maxi "The Return Of Nookie" confirma alors son statut avec le tube "The Sound Of Music". Il développait une musique d'ambiance au goût de jazz et d'acid-jazz typique de l'époque du label Talkin' Loud. Multipliant les projets, enchaînant les remixes plus ou moins réussis certes (ne pas manquer celui pour le "Inner City Life" de Goldie), Nookie s'attache à aider voire épauler à la production des artistes comme Ray Keith et son "Terrorist". 2007 est donc l'année pour un retour au long format avec "Beyond Blue", l'annonce de son émancipation de la galaxie LTJ Bukem. Il est trop rare de trouver des sorties vraiment intéressantes ces derniers temps en matière de drum & bass. Heureusement "Beyond Blue", son cinquième album, ne déçoit pas délivrant un récital d'atmosphère jazz chaloupée "I Love The Way", "Get Down", "Changes", voire vraiment énervée "Life", "Vision Of Paradise". Cet opus est loin d'une cohérence stylistique puisque Nookie termine par quelques tracks moins rapides, plutôt house voire garage "Memories", "Blackout". Il y a de la douceur, une vraie âme ("soul") qui confère à Nookie d'être un producteur et DJ majeur actuel.
"You Can't Hold Me Back" me donne l'impression d'être un condensé de toutes les époques qu'a connu Nookie. Les breaks sonnent jungle (début 1990), les nappes de synthé rappellent la période Goldie et les prémices de la drum & bass (à partir de 1995) et la basse sort tout droit de productions Roni Size et London Elektricity (début 2000). Un brin de nostalgie ressort de ce titre, comme une réconciliation avec un amour de jeunesse.

This opus is far from a stylistic coherence since Nookie finishes by some slower tracks, rather house music even garage one with “Memories”, “Blackout”. There is softness, a true “soul” which confers on Nookie to be a major producer and DJ.
“You Can't Hold Me Back” gives the impression to me to be a digest of all the times that lived Nookie. The breaks sound jungle (at the beginning of 1990), the keyboards point out the Goldie's period and the first steps of drum & bass (since 1995) and the bass reminds Roni Size and London Elektricity productions (at the beginning of 2000). A hint of nostalgia comes out from this track, like a reconciliation with your first love.
