ZION I est un crew sans le sens noble du terme fondé en 1995 et composé de Zion (MC), Amp Live (Producteur) et K-Genius (DJ). Originaires d'Atlanta, il s'installent en Californie à Oakland pour s'offrir une certaine liberté à repousser et même dynamiter les barrières musicales. Amp Live innove, mélange pour ressortir des mélodies harmonieuses et une tonne d'émotions sur lesquelles Zion pose son flow supersonique avec aisance et maîtrise. Justement Zion a une démarche d'écriture aux références mystiques, antimatérialistes et surtout totalement inspiré des premiers rappeurs américains et de leur esprit d'émancipation cher au hip-hop. Bref bien loin des clichés actuels, des énormes bijoux, des femmes faciles dénudées et autres bling-blings !
Zion I débute fort en 2000 avec un premier album que je trouve génial. "Mind Over Matter" est novateur intégrant sons digitaux et beats junglists, il sera l'album de cette année 2000 et vraie révélation pour bon nombre de fans de hip-hop. Le second ''Deep Water Slang'', sorti en 2003, prend une autre direction tout restant dans la continuité : aller encore plus loin dans la recherche musicale…Je le trouve malgré tout un cran en dessous. Puis 2005 arrive avec la livraison de "True & Livin' ", enfin sorti car trouver un label fut à priori délicat. C'est finalement Live Up qui s'en occupera. Cet album étonnant allie le fond et la forme plaçant la barre très haut comparé au paysage actuel des sorties hip-hop. On y retrouve de nombreux invités issus de la crème du rap indé comme Gift of Gab, Aesop Rock ou encore Del. On se retrouve dans un univers mystérieux voire psychédélique à l'ambiance surtout jazz cette fois-ci. A retenir le titre 'Doin' My Thang'.
C'est finalement l'hommage rendu à Oakland par ZION I et de TALIB KWELI que je sélectionne. Le morceau 'The Bay' rappelle le 'Sitting On The Bay' d'Otis Redding avec cette mélodie jouée à la basse qui s'envole à chaque refrain tel un cri de (dés)espoir envers cette fameuse baie...

Precisely Zion has a step of writing to the mystical, antimaterialists references especially inspired of the first American rappers and their expensive spirit of emancipation with hip-hop. Very far from the nowadays hip-hop stereotyps, the enormous jewels, the stripped easy women and others stuff like that !
Zion I begins extremely in 2000 with a first album which I find brilliant. Finally I chose the homage to Oakland by Zion I and Talib Kweli. The track 'The Bay' reminds me the song 'Stand by me' of Ben E. King with a bass melody which flies away with each chorus, such a cry of hope towards this famous bay...
