Brother Ali est une figure unique dans le paysage des MC US. Afro-américain musulmam et albinos, Brother Ali est un puriste du genre à la loyauté d'un autre temps, perpétuant un hip-hop old-school dont il est aujourd'hui le fer de lance.
Je l'ai découvert en 2004 quand il sortit "Shadows In The Sun" qui se différenciait de toutes les productions du moment à travers une fraîcheur et une nostalgie remarquable. Brother Ali et son flow funky et ses paroles (passionnantes selon les forums de discussions américains) ont trouvé en la personne d'Ant, moitié du duo Atmosthere, le faiseur d'instru idéal grâce à ses arrangements soul-jazz des années 70. C'est avec impatience que j'attendais un second volet de la part du Eek-A-Mouse du hip-hop (tous deux sont albinos). C'est le label Rhymesayers Entertainment qui vient d'annoncer la sortie en avril de "The Undisputed Truth". Toujours empreint de militantisme, Brother Ali allie les mots (dans ses lyrics) et les actes (un titre en téléchargement gratuit sur sa page myspace ...). Ant est toujours à la production, vivement le printemps !
Pour nous faire patienter, Brother Ali a sorti un premier maxi "Truth Is". Des paroles vindicatives, une pochette que je trouve magnifique et un fameux riddim jamaicain revu et corrigé ("Truths & Rights" de Johnny Osbourne). Tout y est pour faire un carton (enfin je lui souhaite !). Un défaut : la frustration de devoir attendre encore pour découvrir les autres titres.

Brother Ali, his funky flow and his lyrics (enthralling according to the American discussions forums) found in the person of Ant, half of the duet Atmosthere, the ideal beatmaker thanks to his soul-jazz instrumentals from the Seventies. It is impatiently that I awaited a second volume on behalf of the hip-hop Eek-A-Mouse (both are albinos). It is the label Rhymesayers Entertainment which has just announced the launch in April of “The Undisputed Truth”. Always full of militancy, Brother Ali combines words (in his lyrics) and acts (a track in free dwnload on his myspace…). Ant is always at the production. I can't wait fo spring!
To give us a chance to be patient, Brother Ali has just released a first EP “Truth Is”. Vindicatory words, a cover I find splendid and a famous jamaican riddim revisited (Johnny Osbourne's “Truths & Rights”). All is gathered to be a success (I wish him !). What a frustration to wait for the other tunes!
