Snoop Dogg, ex Snoop Doggy Dogg, n'a plus besoin de présentation. Icône hip-hop jouissant d'une reconnaissance autant grand public qu'underground, caricature du rappeur américain bling bling, Snoo Dogg a le mérite d'avoir un goût de l'humour et de la dérision que j'apprécie ainsi qu'un certain talent à sélectionner les meilleurs titres qu'il commande à tous les tracks producers de la scène américaine.

Un énième album est annoncé pour 2008 et le nouveau single est déjà disponible en téléchargement légal et illégal (à vous de choisir !). Le producteur Shawty Redd rend un hommage au funk du début des années 80, hommage à Prince, Rick James et consors. La nappe de synthé me rappelle certaines productions House de Chicago des années 80. Snoop Dogg rappe et chante (ce qu'il fait de plus en plus souvent), notamment avec une talk box, vocoder de l'époque, instrument de prédilection de Roger Troutman (cf. "California Love"). C'est un peu comme si Snoop Dogg faisait un featuring sur un morceau de Daft Punk. Et contrairement à Kanye West et son titre "Stronger", cela ne sonne pas putassier mais plein de sensualité.

Pour l'anecdote, les titre et refrain originaux "Sexual Eruption" ont été censurés et renommé par "Sensual Seduction" pour pouvoir passer sur MTV. Laissons de côté un débat qui serait stérile. Je vous mets aussi la vidéo rétro, hilarante et ridiculous comme Snoop Dogg nous a proposé par la passé (il excelle dans ce domaine).

Snoop Dogg raps and sings (what he does more and more often), particularly with a talk box machine, kind of vocoder, preferred instrument of Roger Troutman (check "California Love"). It is a bit like Snoop Dogg features on a song of Daft Punk. And unlike Kanye West and his track "Stronger", it does not sound but full of sensuality.

For the anecdote, the title and chorus "Sexual Eruption" were censored and renamed "Sensual Seduction" in order to be on MTV. Let's leave aside a sterile debate . take a look at the retro, hilarious and ridiculous video.

Par quel bout rédiger cette chronique ? Parler du mouvement à la mode, la tecktonik, ou bien de la bretonne la plus hype du moment, Yelle, ou alors de Kitsuné qui, une fois de plus, nous gratifie d'un énième excellent maxi. Est-ce Kitsuné qui tente de se réaccapérer la tecktonik en éditant des remixes de Yelle ? Est-ce Yelle qui essaie de se racheter une crédibitilité après sa participation douteuse sur un morceau de Michael Youn ? Est-ce la tecktonik qui se répand à vitesse grand V ?

Beaucoup de questions, peu de réponses car ce qui compte, c'est que la musique soit bonne. Or elle l'est sur cette relecture très libre d'un hit des années 80 écrit par Alain Chanfort, "A Cause Des Garçons". De l'électro à la française, à savoir déstructurée et cohérente, une fraîcheur de tous les instants, une énergie naturelle qui se dégage même à travers les différents remixes qui composent ce maxi. Riot In Belgium et son côté rock-breakbeat tandis que Punks Jump Up proposent une version dance année 90 qui devrait cartonner du côté de chez les chtis.

Le fournisseur sonore de Yelle, Tepr, était certainement le plus à l'aise à remixer "A Cause Des Garçons". Les boîtes à rythmes crachent, les synthés claquent. De quoi se défouler grâce à celui qui fut membre du mythique groupe français Abstrackt Keal Agram.

How to start this review? Speaking of the fashionable movement, tecktonik or the most hype British singer, Yelle, or alternatively Kitsuné which, once again, issues one more excellent EP. Is it Kitsuné which is attempting to get into the tecktonik style editing remixes of Yelle's tune? Is Yelle who tries to redeem credibility after his stupid featuring on a track of Michael Youn? Does the tecktonik which is spreading at great speed?

Many questions, few answers, because the most important point is the music must be good. You'll findon this opus this very different version of a French 80's hit written by Alain Chanfort, "A Cause Des Garçons". In French electro style, I mean destructured and consistent, a true freshness of every moment, a natural energy that emerges even through the different remixes. Riot In Belgium and his rock-breakbeat style while Punks Jump Up offer a dance 90's version which should get success in Belgium and north of France.

The sound supplier, Yelle, Tepr, was certainly the most comfortable producer to remix "A Cause Des Garçons". The beatboxes spit, the keyboards slam. What to unwind with the man who was a member of the legendary French band Abstrackt Keal Agram!

La scène électronique allemande a le vent en poupe en cette année 2007. Après Digitalism, Boys Noize, voici le duo Moonbootica qui refait parler de lui avec "Moonlight Welfare", leur deuxième album. Les 2 résidants d'Hambourg, Tobitob et Kowesix, ont mixé aux quatres coin du monde à la suite du succès de leur premier album "Moonbootica" sorti en 2005.

Le second, également publié sur leur label Moonbootique, est dans la même veine que le premier. Résolument électro, les deux compères disposent d'un savoir-faire pour proposer des tracks efficaces pour faire bouger tout une dancefloor. A cela, ils ont rajouté une variété de styles qui est loin d'être déplaisante. Un côté pop sucrée avec "A Perfect Machine" et "Der Mond", un volet electro-hip-hop sur "Do You See", une facette nu-soul avec "Ridin A Train", une autre très électroclash sur "Joan Landor", des influences issues de Digitalism et Justice que l'on retrouve sur "Strobelight", "Like A Riot". Loin d'être incohérents, les Moonbootica frappent juste et fort. Précipitez-vous sur cet album à la distribution malheureusement trop limitée.

Et le coup de coeur pour ce qui devrait être le premier single issu de l'opus, "Jump Around", reprise du morceau de House Of Pain. Le rap a été robotisé par les quatre mains allemandes qui ont galvanisé l'énergie de ce titre avec une basse ravageuse et des montées incessantes. Alors sautez maintenant !

The second, also published on the label Moonbootique is in the same vein of the first. Resolutely electro, the two producers have the know-how to offer efficient tracks that make dancing all dancefloors. Then, they added a variety of styles that is far from being unpleasant. A sweet pop side with "A Perfect Machine" and "Der Mond," a electro-hip-hop component on "Do You See", a nu-soul facet with "Ridin A Train", another very electroclash on "Joan Landor", and some influences of Digitalism and Justice found on "Strobelight" and "Like A Riot". Far from being incoherent, Moonbootica hits just and strong. Buy this album without any doubt even if the distribution unfortunately is too limited.

And my favourite which should be the first single of the album, "Jump Around", a version of House Of Pain's track. The flow was robotized by the four hands of two German produces who galvanized the energy of this tune with a powerful bass. So now please jump!

Border Crossing était l'une de mes première chroniques, la découverte d'un trio de DJ-producteurs anglais dont la sortie en 2003 de leur premier album “Omnious” avait marqué mon esprit. Un album complet réussi qui appuyait un peu plus la qualité de production de la scène UK. Depuis, le trio est devenu duo réunissant Seorais et Aj qui se sont afférés à l'écriture d'un second album, source trop souvent de désillusion tant les espoirs placés dans certains artistes sont élevés.

Et cette fois-ci, le challenge est relevé. Border Crossing délivre un deuxième opus largement au niveau du premier. “Freedom of Speech” démontre l'existance d'une véritable marque de fabrique sonore du duo appuyée par une confiance en eux traduite par cette prise de "Liberté de Parole". Place à la diversité des styles : soul, hip-hop, reggae, dance-hall et ambiance arabisante. Loin d'être une fourre-tout, cet album m'a impressionné par l'excellence atteinte dans chacun des styles abordés bien entourés d'invités prestigieux, Ricky Ranking au timbre jamaicain, Jehst, Rodney P et Fat Jon avec leurs flows et surtout Alex Watson, vraie diva de la soul anglaise. Sans même avoir la lassitude d'une écoute en boucle de "Freedom Of Speech", j'ai l'appétit encore gigantesque pour découvrir leur première BO pour le film "Dolphins" avec la participation de Roots Manuva et Ricky Ranking.

J'ai longuement hésité entre "City Of Live", morceau à l'émotion poignante et sa ligne de basse monstrueuse, et "It Ain't Easy", ovni séduisant baléarique. Drummie Zeb (Aswad) chante, chuchotte sur une nappe de synthé entrecoupée d'une trompette éloignée. On s'imagine allongé dans un transat sur une plage assistant au coucher du soleil sirotant un cocktail. Sauf que nous sommes en hiver ! Tant pis....

Border Crossing was one of my first reviews, a discovery of a trio of English DJ-producers who released in 2003 their debut album "Omnious" which marked my mind. An album successfully which proved the high quality of production in the UK scene. Since then, the trio became a duet gathering Seorais and Aj who worked hard writing a second album, too often a source of disillusionment as the hopes placed in some artists are high.

And this time the challenge is raised. Border Crossing issues a second opus widely at the first. "Freedom of Speech" demonstrates the existence of a genuine sound trademark backed by a trust in them resulted in the album title "Freedom of Speech". Place of music styles diversity: soul, hip-hop, reggae, dance-hall and arabish atmosphear. Far from being a tot, this album impresses me by the attained excellence in each tackled style well surrounded by special guests, Ricky Ranking and his Jamaican style, Jehst, Rodney P and Fat Jon with their flows, and especially Alex Watson, the English soul diva. Without even having the fatigue of listening "Freedom Of Speech" in repeat mode, I still have a huge appetite to discover their next first soundtrack for the movie "Dolphins" with the participation of Roots Manuva and Ricky Ranking.

I have long hesitation between "City Of Live", a track full of emotion and its monstrous bassline, and "It Ain't Easy", attractive balearic UFO. Drummie Zeb (Aswad) sings on a keyboard melody with a distant trumpet. Let's imagine ourself lying in a deck chair on a beach seing the sunset and drinking a cocktail. Except that we are in winter! L'hiver est bien installé à Paris avec ses pluies, ses brises glaciales et ses jours raccourcis. Au milieu de ce tableau noir, un mix pour éclaircir cet horizon et laisser l'imaginaire nous projeter vers des lendemains plus ensoleillés et apaisants. Une parenthèse détente en cette période difficile.

Rodney Hunter est loin d'être quelqu'un de connu alors qu'il le mérite. Sa longévité (plus de 20 ans), ses participations à différents projets comme le légendaire Moreaus, son label Uptight dont les productions l'ont placé en haut de l'affiche et sans oublier ses fantastiques remixes (Omar, Gravediggaz, Cornershop ou encore Shantel).

C'est en 2004 que Rodney Hunter nous livre son premier album solo "Hunter Files" que je mis parmi les albums majeurs. Ce mélange de musique black soul, lounge et funk est un régal auditif acclamé par la critique à l'époque. J'attendais son deuxième album pour confirmer tout le bien que je pensais de cet américain. C'est toujours sur le label autrichien G-Stone Recordings que Rodney Hunter sort "Hunterville". Trois années à peaufiner son son, à faire ses arrangements tel un architecte sonor tout en s'inspirant de l'héritage proposé par Herbie Hancock, Average White Band entre autre. Cet album est un véritable tour de force où les racines de Rodney Hunter sont à la fois présentes et modernisées. Un opus plein de pétites et la confirmation d'un talent ecclectique.

Je trouve que le morceau "Universe" sur lequel apparaît Jay Sebag, est représentatif du travail de Rodney Hunter où il est difficile de se repérer. Est-ce du R'nB modernisée, de la Lounge Music accellérée ? Ce titre est à la fois d'une pureté et d'une sophistication incroyable, la mélodie simple et les arrangements très élaborés. Des paradoxes, encore et encore. Mais que c'est bon !

It was in 2004 that Rodney Hunter released his first solo album, "Hunter Files" that I put one of the best 2004 albums. This mix of black soul, funk and lounge music is a hearing treat critically acclaimed. I was expecting his second album to confirm all the good I thought of this American. It's always on the Austrian G-Stone Recordings label that Rodney Hunter produces "Hunterville". Three years perfecting his sound, his arrangements as an sonor architect while drawing on the legacy made by Herbie Hancock, Average White Band, among others. This album is great and really impressive. The roots of Rodney Hunter are both present and modernized. A opus full of gold nuggets and a confirmation of a eclectic talent.

I think the song "Universe" on which features Jay Sebag, is representative of the work of Rodney Hunter : difficult to analyse. Is this modernized R'n'B, uptempo lounge music ? This track is both a purity and an incredible sophistication, a simple melody and sophisticated arrangements. Paradoxes and over again. But that's all good!
