"Hope And Sorrow" regorge de pépites à faire passer un cookie fait maison pour une imposture. "Once Upon The Past", qui ouvre l'album, devrait être pour beaucoup le morceau de bravoure du deuxième LP du Français Wax Tailor, la réminiscence ultra inspirée de l'âge d'or du trip-hop. Probablement le meilleur morceau de Portishead - avec des bouts de guitares façon Adrian Hutley dedans - depuis que Portishead s'est emmuré vivant. Avec en ouverture un sample qui nous explique assez habilement que sans sample, ce type de musique n'est rien. Dans le genre bristolien, "We be" se tient là aussi, qui rappelle furieusement Tricky, période "Premillenium Tension", avec Ursula Rucker en guest star.
En guise d'introduction à "Hope and Sorrow", rien ne vaut pourtant à mes yeux "House of Wax". Parce que ce titre illustre à merveille le versant hip hop de l'album et un peu moins le côté trip. Parce qu'il commence justement (en fait la fin de la chanson précédente) par cet extrait de film (?) drôlatique : "Could you play something gay ? Yes !". Et parce qu'on ne peut qu'adorer le rap du Sud Est américain depuis les Cunninlyngists. Or ça tombe vachement bien, les lyrics sont de Madwreck et Mattic, les MCs de The Others, originaires de Charlotte en Caroline du Nord. The Others sont des compagnons de longue date de Wax Tailor puisqu'il participait déjà à "Tales Of The Forgotten Memories" (sur "Walk The Line" et "Where My Heart's At") et que leur premier album, "Past Futuristic", est sorti il y a un an sur le label de Wax Tailor, Undercover.
"House Of Wax"est un morceau de groove brut où les MC's se complètent comme la main droite de la gauche, soutenus par une boite à rythme et une trompette qui font invariablement penser à un homme qui marche. "Sound To Perfection, Brain To Your Section..." Le refrain risque d'ailleurs de vous trotter dans la tête un moment. Et rien ne vous empêche de prendre ensuite votre veille Cadillac décapotable pour redescendre ensuite vers la Floride pour rejoindre d'autres rappeurs, ceux d'ASM, sur la track n°7, "Positively Inclined". Un autre morceau excellent, guidé avec génie par la flute de la magnifique Marine Thibault (qui justifierait presque à elle seule de voir Wax Tailor en concert...). Que des pépites, on vous dit !
“Hope And Sorrow” has many gold nuggets to present a home made cookie as an imposture. “Once Upon The Past”, which opens the album, should be for many of you a great moment of the second LP of the French Wax Tailor, an ultra reminiscence inspired of the golden age of trip-hop music. Probably the best track of Portishead - with typical Adrian Hutley's slides of guitar inside - since Portishead was immured alive. With in opening a sample which rather skilfully explains us why without sample, this kind of music should not have existed. In the bristol style, “We Be” is here too, and reminds Tricky furiously, of the period “Premillenium Tension”, with Ursula Rucker in featuring.
As an introduction to “Hope and Sorrow”, nothing is worth however in my eyes “House of Wax”. Because this track illustrates more the hip-hop side than the trip-hop one. Because it precisely starts by a movie funny sample : “Could you play something gay ? Yes !”. And because we can only adore the South American hip-hop since Cunninlyngists. However it rocks, the lyrics are of Madwreck and Mattic, MCs of The Others, coming from Charlotte in North Carolina. The Others are companions from the beginning of Wax Tailor since they featured in his first album “Tales Of The Forgotten Memories” (on “Walk The Line” and “Where My Heart's At”) and their first album, “Past Futuristic”, was released last year on the Wax Taylor's label, Undercover.
“House Of Wax " is a depp groovy tune where the two MCs are complementary like the right hand and the left one, supported by a digital beatbox and a trumpet which invariably make think of a walking man. “Sound To Perfection, Brain To Your Section…” is the chorus which should stay in your head for a long time. And nothing prevents you from taking your old convertible Cadillac before going down to Florida to join other MCs, those of ASM, on the track n°7, “Positively Inclined”. Another excellent song, guided with genius by the flute of the splendid Marine Thibault (who justifies alone the reason to see Wax Taylor and her on stage). Only golden nuggets, we said to you!
