Nightmares On Wax est le projet de George Evelyn qui sévit depuis que je suis tout petit. N.O.W. est un groupe qui possède une identité sonore reconnaissable entre mille, un onge doux aux plaisirs immédiats, flirtant entre le trip-hop et l'ambiant, usant de rythmiques funks ou empreintées au hip-hop et de vocals bien choisies. Un travail d'orfèvre qui le consacra en 1995 avec l'album "Smoker Delight", un down-tempo estampillé reggae et rocksteady.
Après 4 ans d'absence, on pouvait légitimement se poser des questions sur l'avenir musical de Nightmares on Wax, tant son précédent album, "Mind Elevation" sorti en 2002, avait été décevant. Il reste un des artistes piliers de WARP Records, label techno de Sheffield fondé en 1988 (ça ne nous rajeunit pas !) qui rentra dans la légende dans les années 90 aux côtés des Ninja Tune, des défunts Mo'Wax ou encore Cup Of Tea Records grâce à une floppée d'artistes qui marquèrent cette décennie (Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher...). N.O.W. fait donc son retour avec "In A Space Outta Sound" à base de samples jazzy, de breakbeats ou d'influences dub. Même si l’album s’écoute avec plaisir, il ne dégage pas suffisamment de force et d’émotion pour sortir du lot des banals albums de downtempo.
Il n'en demeure pas moins que le titre "Puddots" est une vraie trouvaille avec des trompettes fantastiques qui font virevolter et un break old-school de hip-hop de quoi faire chavirer toute une salle. Une pépite que l'on réécoutera régulièrement.

N.O.W. is a band which has a recognizable sound identity between thousands, a soft onge with immediate pleasures, going between trip-hop and ambient, using funk and hip-hop rhythms and nice selected vocals. A work of goldsmith which devoted him in 1995 with the album "Smoker Delight", a classic down-tempo album tinged of reggae and rocksteady. A master class!
After 4 years of absence, we can legitimately ask ourself about the musical future of Nightmares On Wax, so much his last album, "Mind Elevation" relased in 2002, had been disappointing. There remains one of the main artists of WARP Records, mythical techno label of Sheffield founded in 1988 which became legend in the Nineties like Ninja Tune, Mo'Wax or Cup Of Tea Records thanks to some artists who had a huge influence during this decade (Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher...). N.O.W. thus make his return with "In A Space Outta Sound" containing jazzy samples, breakbeats or dub influences. Even if lisntening this LP is a pleasure, it does not release sufficient force and emotion to take it of the mass of down-tempo commonplace albums.
The track "Puddots" is for sure an incredible find with a fantastic trumpets sample which makes twirling and a pure hip-hop old-school break what to make capsize a whole dancefloor. A gold nugget one will listen to regularly.
