Jay Dee était tout petit à la fin mais il restera grand. Atteint d'une maladie du sang, il a effectué son dernier concert en fauteuil roulant - en Belgique - avant de décéder d'une crise cardiaque en février 2006. Son souvenir reste intact et son impact immense pour le hip-hop et la nu-soul du monde entier. Je me rappelle des hommages appuyés du crew Stone Throw (voir la galerie photos à la Chapelle Saint-Sauveur cet automne), l'automne dernier en région parisienne, au producteur de Detroit, qui avait déménagé à L.A. en 2004 afin de collaborer avec Madlib. Au Brésil, le collectif Mochilla est à l'origine de ce tribute, "Obrigado Dilla", enregistré trois mois après sa mort à Sao Paulo lors de la soirée Brasilintime (voir le trailer).
Ce qui marque tout d'abord, c'est la classe absolue de l'ambiance. Le rendu visuel est excellent, la qualité intéressante, le son impeccable et surtout l'oeuvre produite est d'une très grande beauté. 6'25" de douces variations autour de samples issus de "Saudade Vem Correndo" de Stan Getz, ou plutôt de la version travaillée par Jay Dee pour The Pharcyde sur le célèbre morceau "Runnin' " . Des Brésiliens travaillant sur le remix fait par un Américain d'un morceau brésilien donc. Les MC's sont très discrets, ce qui rend le mix universel et intemporel, mais les quelques mots en brésilien ont un charme certain. B+, membre de Mochilla et directeur de Brasilintime, dévoile sur scène une collection de photos de Jay-Dee, dont une absolument magnifique où il est accroupi en face de Madlib dans un magasin de vinyls (lire la genèse ce tribute par B+).
Jay Dee was very small at the end of his life but he will ever be big. Suffering of a blood disease, he carried out his last show in wheel chair - in Belgium - before dying of a heart attack in February 2006. His memory remains intact and his immense impact for worldwide hip-hop and nu-soul. I remember supported tributes of Stones Throw crew (check the pictures gallery made at la Chapelle Saint-Sauveur last autumn) in Paris area, for the producer from Detroit, who moved to L.A. in 2004 in order to collaborate with Madlib. What impresses at the first sight is the absolute class of atmosphear. The video quality is great and interesting, the sound is excellent and the produced result is a rare beauty. 6'25 of soft variations around samples coming from “Saudade Vem Correndo” of Stan Getz, or rather the Jay Dee's production for The Pharcyde on the famous track “Runnin”. Brazilian guys working on a remix of a tune made by an American of a Brazilian track ! The MC's are discrete, and offer an timeless mix, but the few Brazilian words have an unquestionable charm.
