Bonobo, de son vrai nom Simon Green, est originaire de Brighton. Cela a son importance car c'est souvent en bord de mer que l'inspiration et l'écoute de musique chill-out s'opèrent. Dès sa signature sur le label Tru Thoughts et son premier album 'Animal Magic', il obtient un succès et une reconnaissance. Il est ainsi devenu un expert de l'électro-acoustique sans tomber dans le style musique d'ascenceur.

Depuis, ce soliste a remixé (Zero 7, Amon Tobin...) et signé sur Ninja Tune. C'est un véritable virage pour lui qui parfait son downtempo en y associant de l'abstract hip-hop pour un résultat 'Dial M for Monkey' qui enchanta de nombreuses personnes devenues fan de l'anglais (moi le premier !). Ses ambiances délicates, à la fois moelleuses et chaleureuses s'appuient sur des inspirations magiques et une maîtrise des arrangements de cordes et des machines (le sampler avant tout). Octobre 2006 est attendu comme jamais car c'est la date de sortie de son prochain album 'Days to Come'.

Pour patienter, un premier EP est sorti avec 3 titres qui pourront en rassurer certains. Pour preuve, le premier morceau 'Nightlite' est incroyable. Il est clair qu'il ne passera pas en radio mais peu importe, la magie s'opère avec cette soul prenante basée sur une mélancolie magnifique de violons, de guitares et de piano. Comment ne pas mentionner cette chanteuse qui m'était inconnue jusqu'à présent, Bajka (prononcé "Biker") dont la voix sublime ce titre. Installée en Allemagne, elle apparaît sur des labels reconnus comme Ubiquity, Jazzman et Compost Records mais aussi sur d'autres morceaux du prochain opus de Bonobo. Vite Vite Vite !

Since this time, this soloist remixed (Zero 7, Amon Tobin…) and signed on Ninja Tune. It is a key turn for his carrier which perfects his downtempo sound while associating it of abstract hip-hop for a result “Dial M for Monkey” which enchanted many people become fan of the English guy (me too !). His delicate atmospheres, at the same time marrowy and cordial are based on magic inspirations and a control of strings arrangements and of the machines (the sampler above all). October 2006 is awaited as ever because it is the date of exit of his next album “Days to Come”.

During waiting for it, a first EP has just released with 3 tracks which will be able to reassure some of you. To prove it, just listen to the first song “Nightlite” which is incredible. It is clear that it will not pass out of radio but it does not matter, the magic takes place with this fascinating soul based on a splendid melancholy of violins, guitars and piano. How to forget, this singer who was unknown for me until now, Bajka (say “Biker”) whose voice sublimates this track. Installed in Germany, she appears on well respected labels such as Ubiquity, Jazzman and Compost Records but also on other tracks of next the opus of Bonobo. I can't wait for it anymore...

Il est malheureusement rare d'entendre parler des scènes nordiques. Et pourtant des tas de labels et artistes mériteraient une écoute plus attentionnée. Si un artiste suédois m'impressionne par le nombre de sorties et par la qualité de ses remixes, c'est bien Beatconductor et ses nombreux pseudos, à l'aise dans tous les styles du hip-hop à la soul, du reggae à l'afro beat toujours imprégné de latin style.

Jazzconductor est un de ses derniers projets particulièrement marqué par un funk jazzy, comme son nom l'indique. Le premier maxi en 2005 "Entertainers" est un pur morceau de breakbeat jazz accompagné par Jeru au micro. Il revient en 2006 avec 2 nouveaux opus "Wadin" et "Showcase" plus hip-hop. Le titre "Swahili" est une magnifique reprise du morceau éponyme de Clark Terry datant des années 50. Une (pro)fusion de jazz qui sonne frais et jouissif.

Et que dire du fantastique "Disco Carnival", véritable carnaval de jazz dopé à la house. Des synthés en abondance, une basse funky, des beats enchaînants et entraînants. Totalement grooovy !

It is unfortunately rare to hear about the Scandinavian scenes. Instead of labels and artists that would deserve a listening more attentive. If a Swedish artist impresses me by the number of releases and the quality of his remixes, this guy would be Beatconductor and his various other names, at ease in all styles of the hip-hop to the soul, of reggae to afro latin style.

Jazzconductor, one of his last projects, is particularly marked by a funk jazzy, as its name indicates it. The first EP in 2005 “Entertainers” is a pure piece of breakbeat jazz featuring Jeru at the mic. He returns in 2006 with 2 new opus “Wadin” and “Showcase”, more hip-hop influenced. The track “Swahili” is a splendid resumption of the eponym track of Clark Terry dating from the Fifties. One (pro)fusion of jazz which sounds fresh and sensual.

And what to say except fantastic about “Disco Carnival”, a true carnival of jazz doped with the house. Keyboard in affluence, a funky bass, uptempo happy beats. Completely grooovy !

Les Easy Star All-Stars sont un collectif de musiciens spécialisés dans les reprises en version reggae. Déjà chroniqués pour leur premier album "Dub side of the moon", album de covers du plus célèbre LP de Pink Floyd.

Ils remettent ça cette année avec "Radiodread", une relecture du mythique "Ok computer" du groupe d'Oxford, Radiohead. Les chanteurs reggae se succèdent comme les illustres Toots & The Maytals, Sugar Minott ou encore les Israel Vibrations qui ont le courage de se confronter à l'exceptionnelle voix de Thom Yorke (qui a récemment sorti son premier album solo "The Eraser"). Exercice périlleux, le résultat des Easy Star All-Stars est au final mitigé, l'effet surprise en moins jouant en leur défaveur. Reste malgré tout des moments intéressants comme ce dub gavée de reverb pour "Lucky" et une version ska de "Subterranean Homesick Alien".

Comme sur l'album original selon moi, "Airbag" est le meilleur morceau qui est à redécouvrir. C'est une réussite totale ouvrant magistralement le disque grâce notamment à la voix androgyne d'Horace Andy, vraiment à l'aise sur ce titre (l'expérience Massive Attack aidant sûrement). C'était peut-être là la clé de ce projet : trouver des chanteurs reggae qui puissent vraiment tenir la dragée haute à l'une des plus belle voix de l'histoire de la musique. Horace Andy prouve ainsi qu'il fait parti des grands chanteurs. Quelqu'un en doutait ?

Easy Star All-Stars are a collective of musicians specialized in reggae covers. Already reviewed here for their first album “Dub side of the moon”, album of covers of the Pink Floyd's most famous LP "Dark Side of The Moon".

They come back this year with “Radiodread”, a second reading of the classic “Ok computer” of the band from Oxford, Radiohead. Many reggae singers are invited like famous Toots & The Maytals, Sugar Minott or Israel Vibrations who have courage to be confronted with the exceptional voice of Thom Yorke (who recently released his first solo album “The Eraser”). Perilous exercise, the result of Easy Star All-Stars is mitigated, the surprise effect in less making in their discredit. Despite, you can take a listen to the dub cover full “Lucky” of reverb and a ska version of “Subterranean Homesick Alien”.

As on the original album, according to me, “Airbag” is the best track. It is a total success opening the opus thanks in particular to the androgyn voice of Horace Andy, really at ease on this track (He reminds Massive Attck featurings). It was perhaps the key point of this project : singers who can really support the comparison with the one of the most beautiful voice of music history. Horace Andy proves he is one the best singers. Do somebody doubt about it?
