Un peu de latin pour commencer : Alter Ego signifie un autre moi, tel un accolyte très personnel. Rien de mieux comme nom de groupe lorsque deux amis allemands Roman Flügel et Jörn Elling Wuttke décident dans les années 80 de se lancer dans la musique. Débutant sous le nom d'Acid Jesus (il n'y a que des allemands qui arrivent à avoir une telle imagination !), ils deviennent Alter Ego en 1994.
Les fondateurs de plusieurs labels très respectés, Klang, Playhouse et Ongaku, sortent un premier album éponyme d'Alter Ego suivi de "Decoding The Hacker Myth" et "Alterism" en 1996. La consécration est apparue en 2004 avec "Transformer". Alter Ego a trouvé la bonne formule : des synthétiseurs criars et bourdonnants, une énergie très rock et un côté barré typique de la techno. Le titre "Rocker" restera comme culte et "Transformer" eut un tel succès qu'en 2005, un album (incontournable) de remixes fut édité en 2005 sous le nom de "Transformed". Et c'est le grand retour d'Alter Ego, attendu au tournant car l'impatience de retrouver la douce folie du duo était forte. "Why Not?" reste du Alter Ego, plus doux que "Transformer", plus mélodique mais toujours cette dose d'agressivité, de décontraction, pas d'artifices. Alter Ego se fiche des modes. Pourquoi ? La réponse est dans le titre de l'album.
Mon coup de coeur se tourne vers "Gary", ballade cosmique intersidérale qui me rappelle les ambiances de M83. Un artifice de synthétiseurs qui rugissent, une planitude psychédélique pleine de modernité. Bienvenu dans l'espace !

Nothing better as a band name when two German friends, Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke decided in the '80s to get into music. Beginning under the name of Acid Jesus (only Germans can imagine such a name!) they become Alter Ego in 1994.
The founders of several highly respected labels, Klang, Playhouse and Ongaku, recorded a first eponymous album with Alter Ego name followed by "The Hacker Decoding Myth" and "Alterism" in 1996. The consecration was in 2004 with "Transformer." Alter Ego found the right formula: noisy industrial keyboards, a rock & tehcno energy. The track "Rocker" has become an anthem and "Transformer" was so successful that in 2005, an album (unavoidable) of remixes was published in 2005 under the name "Transformed." And it is the comeback of Alter Ego, under the spotlights because of strong impatience to refind the sweet madness of the duet . "Why Not?" is a typical Alter Ego's style, sweeter than "Transformer", still more melodic but still with this aggressiveness, coolness, no articifial. Alter Ego don't care about hype. Why? The answer is in the title of the album.
My favorite track is "Gary", a cosmic space ballad which reminds me of the atmosphere of M83. A firework of synthesizers which roar, a peacefull psychedelism full of modernity. Welcome to space!
