A la suite de la soirée d'anniversaire du label Stones Throw, j'avais pu apprécier en live les qualités vocales et les freestyles de Percee P, MC américain bien connu des fans de hip-hop underground. Il faut préciser qu'il perpétue la tradition, vendant encore aujourd'hui ses mixtapes dans la rue et ne court pas après la gloire et l'argent mais s'efforce de rendre au hip-hop tout ce qu'il a pu lui apporter, lui qui démarra en 1988 avec le morceau "Let the Homicides Begin". Une démarche de puriste, d'esthéte dénué d'intérêt malsain.
Entre ses mixtapes et les nombreux featurings notamment chez Stones Throw, je ne m'étais encore jamais rendu compte que Percee P n'avait jamais sorti d'album. C'est maintenant chose faite grâce à l'appui de Madlib, producteur de tous les morceaux de "Perseverance"qui porte bien son nom. Avant d'en arriver là, Percee P a pris le temps d'affiner son style, ses mots et attendre de trouver ce qui collait le mieux à l'idée qu'il se faisait de "son" hip-hop. Bien sûr on retrouve ses deux premiers maxis "Throwback Rap Attack" et "Watch Your Step". De nombreuses apparitions qui en disent long de sa réputation, comme Chali 2na, Aesop Rock, Prince Po, participent sur l'album qui aura mis finalement 3 longues années pour être terminé. Le résultat faits de doux samples de funk, soul volupteux est à la hauteur avec un très grand Madlib, de quoi espérer une excellente surprise pour le second volet de Madvillain annoncé pour bientôt.
"The Man To Praise" est le premier morceau sur lequel j'ai accroché, une magnifique boucle de violons rappelant ceux de Isaac Hayes, un refrain à base de moog et voix enfantine sur lesquels Percee P narre de façon directe sa gratitude en faisant une rétrospective de carrière. A soul introspective !
Following the birthday party of Stones Throw, I had been able to appreciate the live vocal quality and freestyles of Percee P, American MC well-known of underground hip-hop lovers. Between his mixtapes and many featurings in particular in Stones Throw, I never noticed that Percee P had never released an album. It is now done thanks to the support of Madlib, producer of all tracks of “Perseverance " which bears its name very well. Before recording it, Percee P took time (he started in 1988) to refine his style, his lyrices and to wait finding what would stuck best to the idea he wanted to develop in hip-hop. Of course you will find his first two EPs “Throwback Rap Attack” and “Watch Your Step”. Many nice appearances, Chali 2na, Aesop Rock, Prince Po, take part on the album which needed 3 years to be finished. The result full of sweet funk and soul loops is great with a nice Madlib at the production, what to hope for an excellent surprise concerning the second alabum of Madvillain announced for soon.
