Voici l'histoire d'une chasse au trésor musicale. Depuis 3 mois, un morceau intitulé "3 Freaks" intrigue le gigantesque microcosme des internautes fans de hip-hop. Totalement inconnu, une quête aux informations se crée sur les forums, blogs et autres sites web afin de déterminer qui se cache derrière ce titre. Certains afficionados du hip-hop de San Francisco finiront par reconnaître les flows de Keak Da Sneak et de Turf Talk, tous deux originaires de la "city by the bay".
"3 Freaks", sorti sur Rapid Pulse Records, est un titre de pur crunk, genre musical très vogue aux US né sur la côte est au début des années 90 et popularisé en 2000 par Lil' John et Ludacris entre autre. Ce morceau fait figure d'ovni pour la scène de San Francisco d'autant que des rumeurs persistaient comme quoi le producteur de ce titre était DJ Shadow qui a gardé le mystère durant plusieurs semaines avant qu'un message laissé sur le forum de Solesides ne vienne confirmé l'inimaginable.
Cela doit faire froid dans le dos de certains puristes de "L'Ombre" de découvrir que l'inventeur du abstract hip-hop produit un crunk aux influences des défunts Antipop Consortium. Le résultat est pourtant excellent et met une fois de plus en avant le don que DJ Shadow possède à créer des beats géniaux sur lesquels les voix roques de Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk s'entrelacent. Vivement le prochain album qui est annoncé pour cette année.
