Née à Seattle où elle était résidente du club le plus populaire, Jumbalaya, et installée depuis à San Diego, Choklate a toujours été impliquée d'une façon ou d'une autre dans la musique et la dance. Agée de 23 ans, elle a débuté par le Gospel et fut introduite dans le hip-hop par DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince grâce au titre 'Parents Just don't Understand'. Touche à tout et surtout amoureuse de toutes les musiques, classique, soul..., elle travaille sur un nouvel album sur lequel travaillent Vitamin D, Jake 1 et BenOne. Elle continue à explorer toutes les facettes de la musique en composant, écrivant et participant à de nombreuses collaborations comme avec Byrdie, Beyond Reality, Illuzions, Boom Bap Project, Framework, Damian Black, Blacksheep, Abstract Rude, Butta Verses, De La Soul, Gift of Gab and Chali 2na’s solo albums. Elle signe sur Kajmere Sound Records qui regroupe des artistes comme The Rebirth, The Strange Fruit Project, Motion Lab one cause. Ce label est une vraie référence pour la musique soul underground d'aujourd'hui et est promoteur de soirées sur la West Coast, organisateur de tournées pour les Jurassic 5, DJ Shadow, Meshell N'Degeocello, Jazzanova, Ron Trent, People Under The Stairs, Black Eyed Peas, Breakestra, Marques Wyatt, Dilated Peoples, DJ Muggs, Cody Chestnut, The World Famous Beat Junkies, DJ Z-Trip, Blackalicious, Vikter Duplaix. La liste est longue et surtout impressionnante en qualité.

Son premier EP (à ma connaissance) s'intitule ' Waitin' ', produit par Vitamin D qui nous prouve necore une fois ses talents en mélangeant Jazz, R&B et un zeste de hip-hop. Ce titre repose sur un sample d'orgue JB, absolument magnifique, un chant typique soul et un flow sombre de Chali2na des Jurassic 5. Non il ne faut pas attendre pour l'écouter...

“ Waitin' ”, the A side of this 12”, from the forthcoming full length, drops with a FUNKY ASS JB’s horn sample, straight soul singing and a blazing cameo by Jurassic 5’s own Chali 2na. No you don't have to wait for listening this tune.

Derrière ce collectif de MC-Producteur-DJ londoniens, se cachent Paul Mulvey, Seorais Graham et AJ (alias Alex Angol), inconnus me direz-vous mais pas tant que cela car ils traînent sur la scène underground UK depuis près de dix ans. Au niveau expérience on peut compter sur eux !

Formé en 2000 et signé sur le label anglais Sound Recordings , Border Crossing est un alliage de hip-hop, r’n’b, dancehall, reggae. Tout y passe et tout s’enchaîne avec une aisance certaine. Ce n'est pas sans rappeler le mouvement Trip-Hop, majeur dans les années 90 (Massive Attack, Portishead, Earthling, Monk & Canatella...) mais totalement remis au goût du jour car ce Trip-Hop des années 2000 est influencé par le Hip-Hop comme son prédecesseur le fut par le Dub (cf : Blue Lines). Pour preuve : ils ont composé un morceau en s'inspirant le tube d'antesque "Witness" de Roots Manuva. Résultat : un titre excellent au nom logique "Searching for Mr Manuva".

Les collaborations sont nombreuses et de qualité avec le titre "More To Life" dont le refrain est chanté par la charmante Alex Watson, associée à Ricky Rankin, un vieux de la vieille du Dance Hall. C'est surtout le featuring de Rockwell qui a retenu mon attention sur le titre "Original Heads". Son flow colle parfaitement à un instru rappelant certains titres des désormais classiques Blackalicious et ses lyrics reprenant les thèmes chers aux MCs des premières années du Hip-Hop.

Formed in 2000 and signed on the English label 'Sound Recordings', Border Crossing is an alloy of hip-hop, R'&B', dancehall and reggae. All there passe and everything is connected with an unquestionable ease. It is not without pointing out Trip-Hop, major mouvement in the 90's (Massive Attack, Portishead, Earthling, Monk & Canatella...) but completely given to the style of the day because this Trip-Hop of the years 2000 is influenced by Hip-Hop as its predecessor was it by Dub (cf : Blue Lines). For proof : they composed a piece by being inspired the tube by antesque "Witness" by Roots Manuva. Result : an incredible track with the logical title "Searching for Mr. Manuva".

Collaborations are numerous and of quality with the track "More To Life" whose refrain is sung by charming Alex Watson, associated with Ricky Rankin, an typical roots man of Dance Hall. It is especially the featuring of Rockwell which held my attention on the title "Original Heads". His flow adhesives perfectly with the music reminding some tracks of the now classical Blackalicious and his lyrics taking again the nostalgic topics of MCs of the first years of hip-hop.
