Il faut bien l'avouer, Ricky Ranking est un inconnu absolu. Aucune information sur lui n'est disponible si ce n'est qu'il est l'invité régulier de Roots Manuva. Il pose sa voix douce offrant une teinte R&B mélangée au reggae à de nombreux titres du meilleur MC anglais. On le retrouve sur différents morceaux comme 'Dreamy Days' de son précédent album, 'Seat Yourself' ou 'Colossal Insight' de son dernier LP. Ami et collaborateur de la première heure, c'est encore lui qui accompagne Mister Witness lors de sa dernière tournée.
Ce n'est pas étonnant qu'il soit signé sur le label Banana Klan fondé par Wayne Bennet et Rodney Smith, aka Roots Manuva, et sort un EP, le premier du label, 'Can't Trick I', composé par Roots Manuva qui y pose quelques flows bien sentis. Il en sort un second intitulé 'Doogoo Machine', sorte d'uppercut de breaks mutilés (difficile à décrire, il faut l'écouter !).
Cette chanson est un bel alliage de hip-hop et de dub d'aujourd'hui, ne reniant pas ses origines sans en être une pâle copie.
Ricky Tanking is not what we call a star. Most of you must not know him. There is no information about him (even on internet !) except one : he did and does featurings on few tracks of Roots Manuva. He puts his sweet voice on tracks and gives them an influence of R&B mixed with reggae. Friend and collaborator from the beginning, Mister Witness invited him for his last Tour.
It is not astonishing that he signed on the label Banana Klan founded by Wayne Bennet and Rodney Smith, aka Roots Manuva, and released a EP, the first of the label, 'Can' T Trick I', composed by Roots Manuva who raps on it. He released there a second heading 'Doogoo Machine', kind of uppercut of mutilated breaks (difficult to describe, it should be listened !).
This song 'Can' T Trick I' is a beautiful alloy of hip-hop and nowadays dub, not disavowing its origins without in being a pale copy.
