Promoe est le leader d'un groupe suédois de hip-hop : Looptroop. Certes respecté, j'avoue n'être pas plus fan que cela. Qu'à ne cela ne tienne, en solo, Promoe s'avère prendre une autre dimension.

En 1999, il sort un EP 'Off The Record' qui sort sur le trop méconnu label américain Street Level Records dans lequel on retrouve entre autre Swing Fly, Agallah ou encore Form One que je vous conseille vivement.

Cet opus fait l'objet d'une réédition qu'il ne faut surtout pas rater. Bien avant les RJD2 et consorts, voici un morceau qui est la définition même de la boucle parfaite pour moi ! Ce sample provient du musicien Michel Gonet issu de 'Flower Dance', également utilisé par Madlib (que j'adore !) sur le titre "Flowers" sorti sous l'un de ses nombreux projets, Beatconductor. Un classique du hip-hop à mes yeux. Euh pardon à mes oreilles !

This sample comes from the musician Michel Gonet resulting from the track 'Flower Dance', also used by Madlib (I adore this guy !) on track "Flowers" for one of his projects, Beatconductor. A classic of hip-hop according to me. Oops sorry according to my ears !

Jel est un américain considéré l'un des meilleurs créateurs d'instru' hip-hop. Il fut membre de Themselves (binome avec Dose), de Clouddead, de Subtle et surtout du collectif underground, 1200 Hobos, qui regroupait, s'il vous plaît, Sixtoo, DJ Signify, Mr Dibbs. 1200 Hobos était une rencontre fortuite mais au combien important pour le hip-hop : tous ces talents réunis donnait l'idée à Jel de créer un label, Anticon où toute innovation musicale est le bienvenue pour offrir un futur au hip-hop ou tout du moins un autre que celui proposé par les business rappeurs que je n'oserai pas citer.

Comme chaque début d'année, on attend toujours avec impatience de connaître les futures sorties d'Anticon, véritable baromètre du défrichage que toute l'écurie américaine opère. A l'image de Coldcut, patrons du label Ninja Tune, c'est Jel qui inaugure 2006 d'un nouvel album 'Soft Money' qui sortira le 28 février prochain avec de nombreux featurings made in Anticon, of course ! J'ai hâte d'entendre le résultat.

Une partie de la réponse est dévoilée avec un premier EP issu de 'Soft Money'. Et c'est de bon augure quand on se prend à tendre l'oreille sur le morceau 'WMD' remixé par Joe Quixx, méconnu en Europe même si sa carrière de producteur et de DJ underground débuta en 1992 et qui collabora avec toutes les pointures hip-hop américaines telles que Nas, Cypress Hill, KRS One, MF Doom, GZA, Gravediggaz. Excusez du peu ! Ce remix est dans la lignée des morceau de RZA : une basse qui carillonne, une flûte en arrière plan et un break purement hip-hop. On ne s'en lasse pas !

Jel is American and is considered as one of the best hip-hop instrumental artist. He was member of Themselves (founded with Dose), of Clouddead, Subtle and especially of the underground collective, 1200 Hobos, which gathered, please notice, Sixtoo, DJ Signify, Mr. Dibbs. 1200 Hobos was a fortuitous meeting but with how much significant sense for hip-hop : all these joined together talents gave the idea to Jel to create a label, Anticon where any musical innovation is welcome to offer a future to the hip-hop or all at least another that that proposed by the businesses rappers that I will not dare to quote.

Like each beginning of year, one always waits impatiently to know the future releases of Anticon, genuine barometer of grubbing until all the American crew operates. As Coldcut, owners of the label Ninja Tune, Jel inaugurates 2006 of a new album 'Soft Money' which will be released on next 28th February with many featurings made in Anticon, of course ! I am in a hurry to hear the result.

A part of the answer is revealed with a first EP resulting from 'Soft Money'. And it is good forecasts when one is caught with tightening the ear on track 'WMD' remixed by Joe Quixx, ignored in Europe even if his career of underground producer and DJ began in 1992 and who collaborated with all American hip-hop respected rappers such as Nas, Cypress Hill, KRS One, MF Doom, GZA, Gravediggaz. Savoir faire bouger, trémousser, transpirer des corps n'est pas donné à tout le monde. Rares sont ces titres ovnis qui parviennent à insufler en soi une énergie qui paraît sans limite, à transcender chacun d'entre de nous d'une manière unanime. 'Rock 01' de Vitalic, 'La Onzième Marche' d'Agoria, 'Burnin' des Daft Punk ou encore 'Brown Paper Bag' de Roni Size ont tous ce point commun de faire exploser les thermomètres de tous les dancefloors. 2006 débute bien avec une soucoupe musicale qu'un certain Joachim Garraud vient de lâcher dans la nature.

Le nom ne dit pas grand chose mais le label sur lequel cet EP sort, permet d'avoir une opinion : c'est sur Fuck Me I'm Famous que 'Rock The Choice' est édité. Joachim Garraud est un vrai professionnel de la musique : producteur (il a travaillé avec Jean-Michel Jarre), fondateur de labels (Wake Up Music & Scream Records), animateur radio, organisateur de raves et soirées. Même si son association avec David Guetta peut laisser perplexe, sorte de french touch encore plus marketée qu'à la grande époque 1997-2001, il n'en demeure pas moins que Joachim Garraud possède un vrai talent de compositeur de bombes festives sans doute très déformées par l'icône d'Ibiza (Vive l'appât du gain !).

Très sincèrement, 'Rock The Choice' est un pur bijou techno, un moment de défouloir où la montée explosive, une boîte à rythme qui guide les pas, des nappes de synthé planantes pour une envolée jouissive. A coup sûr, ce titre risque de marquer de son empreinte l'année 2006. Qui veut parier ?

Rare are tracks coming from nowhere which give you an incredible energy which appears unbounded, to transcend each one among us in a unanimous way. 'Rock'n'roll 01' of Vitalic, 'La Onzième Marche' of Agoria, 'Burnin' of Daft Punk or 'Brown Paper Bag' of Roni Size have all this common point to increase the temperature of all worldwide dancefloors. 2006 begins well with a musical saucer that Joachim Garraud has just released.

His name might be unknown for most of us but the label on which this EP was released, makes it possible to have an idea : it is on Fuck Me I' m Famous that 'Rock'n'roll The Choice' is published. He is the guy who composes with David Guetta, the famous House DJ and nightclubber. Joachim Garraud is a true professional of the music : producer (he worked with Jean-Michel Jarre), founder of labels (Wake Up Music & Scream Records), radio operator organizer, raves and parties organizer. Even if his association with David Guetta can leave perplexed, recording mainstream tunes, kind of commercial marketed French Touch songs, it does not remain about it less than Joachim Garraud has a true talent of composing dancefloor bombs undoubtedly very deformed by the icon of Ibiza (Money is Money !).

Very sincerely, 'Rock'n'roll The Choice' is a pure techno jewel, one moment of pleasure when the explosive rise, speed breaks which guide you steps for a jouissive flight. I am sure this track is likely to mark of its print the year 2006. Who wants to bet ?

Dès l'apparition du genre, le reggae s'est toujours réapproprié les standards. Quelque soit legenre : la soul, le blues, le jazz. Et lui même repris dans d'autres styles : électro (Rhythm & Sound par exemple), house (souvenez-vous de Bob Marley sur 'Sun is Shining'), hip-hop... En revanche, les reprises de rock en version reggae étaient bien moins nombreuses. C'était sans compter sur les musiciens du label fondé en 1996, Easy Star Records.

Quitte à s'attaquer au rock, autant s'en prendre à un chef-d'oeuvre du genre tel que 'Dark Side Of The Moon' des Pink Floyd. Alors adolescent, je vouais un véritable culte à cet opus de légende et prenais ma curiosité des deux mains pour découvrir 'Dub Side Of The Moon', sorte de "reggae tribute" des flamands roses british. Dès la première écoute, on se rend compte que la relation est amusante au départ et logique au final. Lors de la sortie en 1973, Pink Floyd comme Lee Perry et King Tubby en Jamaique, exploraient de nouveaux horizons sonores, montaient et démontaient les structures musicales. Rapprocher rock psychédélique et dub, il fallait y penser (et même oser !) surtout qu'après écoute, cela semble si évident et si naturel. D'ailleurs le reggae n'est-il pas versatile ?

Ce projet ambitieux est une pleine réussite, confortant le culte de l'original. Certains titres font sourire comme 'Money' où les bruits de machines à sous de l'introduction sont remplacés par ceux d'un bang. Et que dire de 'The Great Gig In The Sky' si ce n'est que c'est un vrai diamant. Un titre magistral.

As of the appearance of this style, reggae music has always taken over the hits which can soul, blues, jazz... And it was also tken over by other music genres : electronic (Rhythm & Sound for example), house music(remember Bob Marley on 'Sun is Shining'), hip-hop... On the other hand, the resumptions of rock'n'roll in version reggae were much fewer. It was without counting on the musicians of the label founded in 1996, Easy Star Records.

Difficulty is the right qualification for this project : the choice of a masterpiece of the kind such as 'Dark Side Of The Moon' of Pink Floyd shows how it was risky. When I was a teenager, I dedicated a true worship with this legendary opus and I was at the same time curious and distressed to discover 'Dub Side Of The Moon', a kind of "reggae tribute" of British band. After the first listening, I realized that the relation was funny at the beginning and logical at the end. In 1973, date of album release, Pink Floyd, like Lee Perry and King Tubby in Jamaica, explored new sound horizons, assembled and dismounted musical structures. To bring closer rock'n'roll psychedelic and dub, it was necessary to think of it (and to even dare !) especially that after listening, that seems so obvious and so natural. Moreover is reggae music not versatile ?

This ambitious project is full of success, consolidating the worship of the original. Some tracks make smiling as 'Money' where the noises of slots machines in introduction are replaced by those of a waterpipe. And what to say about the fanstastic track version 'The Great Gig In The Sky' except a musical diamond. A master track should I write.

C'est à Los Angeles que Aceyalone alors membre de Freestyle Fellowship (Mikah 9, Mtulazaji, Self Jupiter et DJ Kiilu) va changer le hip-hop des années 90 larvé par le Gangsta Rap en y intégrant l'influence du jazz. Les albums 'To Whom It May Concern' et 'Innercity Griots' sont des musts notamment grâce à l'alchimie de leurs voix et de leurs textes poétiques. Aceyalone se lance dans une carrière solo dès 1995 avec 'Balls Don't Bounce'.

Il prend de l'assurance et va même fonder son propre label Project Blowed en compagnie du non moins fameux Abstract Rude. Project Blowed est un incubateur à MCs, un lieu de liberté d'expression sous toutes ces formes : raps, intrus... Tout ceci donne naissance à Haiku d'Etat, résultat de la philosophie véhiculée par Project Blowed. Depuis 2002 et 'Hip Hop & The World We Live In', je n'avais plus entendu parler de lui. Ah si ! Il figurait sur la tracklist de la compilation que je vous recommance 'NBA 2K6'. Hip-Hop et basket ont toujours fait bon ménage (pas vrai Shaq !). C'est à ce moment que j'entends parler d'une rencontre entre Acelyalone et RJD2 du label Definitive Jux. Mais rien à l'horizon. Ce qui n'était qu'une rumeur, va voir le jour dès février 2006 : un album entièrement produit par le fils spirituel de DJ Shadow et une vraie renaissance pour l'un des meilleurs MC de la West Coast. Je vous rassure : 'Magnificent City' est à coup sûr la sortie hip-hop de ce début d'année. Patientez encore un mois et vous ne serez pas déçu ! Il se murmure même que le duo a aussi un projet d'album à la DangerDoom, qui pourrait s'appeler ACD2.

RJD2 est un géotrouvetou du sample. Et ce n'est pas le titre 'A Beautiful Mine' qui me fera mentir. Un peu de violons qui font pleurer, un break impeccable et des paroles magnifiques. Bref du très bon boulot.

It is even murmured as the duet has also a project of album as DangerDoom, which could be called ACD2.

RJD2 is the Gyro Gearloose of sampling. And it is not the track 'A Beautiful Mine' which will make me lie. A little violins which make cry, perfect breaks and splendid lyrics. In short, good job !

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, groupe new yorkais de Brooklyn, quartier devenu branché, est sorti de nulle part mais vivement attendu tellement le buzz sur internet était vivace (ça me rappelle les Arcade Fire, preuve que la toile offre une vitrine incomparable pour tous les artistes en herbe). Les 5 membres (Alec Ounsworth, Lee Sargent, Robbie Guertin, Tyler Sargent et Sean Greenhalgh) s'emploient à faire de l'indie pop truffée d’inspirations habilement traitées (Velvet Underground, The Smiths, New Order, Radiohead...). Certainement la sensation de 2006 même si certains internautes avertis les écoutent depuis plusieurs mois.

Quelle est leur portion magique ? La voix du chanteur rappelant Thom Yorke, des rythmes sombres et obsédants, des mélodies simples. Sans être rattaché à une maison de disque, on ressent la liberté qu'ils ont usée pour se faire plaisir variant les moments calmes ou entraînants, les atmosphères tristes ou jouissives. Bref tout ce qui compose nos vies. Bonheurs, malheurs, laissez votre coeur chavirer au gré des 12 titres qui composent cet opus éponyme.

Le titre 'Heavy Metal' est loin des ambiances "metalicesque" ou "iron maideste". A mi-chemin entre du Cure et du Sonic Youth, c'est un morceau vraiment original qui part dans tous les sens. Pour les fans de rock-pop, ce sera l'ensemble de l'album. Vivement le deuxième album.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, band from Brooklyn New York, left nowhere but highly awaited thanks to the buzz on Internet so much was long-lived (that points out the Arcade Fire to me, proof that the web offers big opportunities for all artists). The 5 members (Alec Ounsworth, Lee Sargent, Robbie Guertin, Tyler Sargent and Sean Greenhalgh) get busy to make indie pop with skilfully treated inspirations (Velvet Underground, The Smiths, New Order, Radiohead...). Certainly the event of the beginning of this new year except or the geeks who have listened to them for several months.

Which is their magic portion ? The voice of the singer pointing out Thom Yorke, the dark and obsessing rhythms, the simple melodies. Without any label, one feels the freedom which they used to release this album with pleasure varying the calm and involving moments , sad or happyness atmospheres. Well the composition of our lives. Happinesses, misfortunes, let your heart capsize with the liking of the 12 tracks which compose this self-titled opus.

The track 'Heavy Metal' is my favourite one which is far from "Metallica" or "Iron Maiden" environments even if its title. Between Cure and Sonic Youth, it is a really original song which leaves in all the directions. For the fans pop-rock, it will be the whole of the album. Highly the second album.

Coldcut est un monument musical. Depuis 1986, Jonathon More et Matt Black ont toujours oeuvré pour la musique. Que ce soit sur le devant de la scène (Hey kids, what time is it ? en 1987, Philosophy en 1994 et le cultissime Let us play en 1997) ou en coulisse à travers la création dans les années 90 de labels devenus cultes et indispensables avec Ninja Tune, Ntone et Big Dada. Autant le dire, on leur doit beaucoup !

A l'image de leurs émissions de radio Solid Steel, ils n'ont pas de style : les amateurs de hip hop, trip hop, de house, de techno, de jazz, de reggae.... trouveront toujours un intérêt à se laisser bercer par un éclectisme toujours de bon goût. Et c'est justement en 2006 qu'ils décident de nous offrir un album 'Sound Mirrors', reflet de tous ces genres qui composent le paysage musical de notre nouveau millénaire. C'est certainement le meilleur album de leur longue et illustre carrière. Leur maîtrise de la production n'a jamais été aussi évidente tout comme leur amour pour la musique. Leurs idées n'ont jamais été aussi variées ou intéressantes, laissant place à de nombreux invités de marque comme Jon Spencer de Spencer Blues, le rapper intellectuel Saul Williams ou encore Mike Ladd, qui apportent tous leur pièce à ce patchwork musical contemporain. Oui, c'est un disque qui est profond, génial, intelligent, engagé. Peut-être même une oeuvre majeure, le temps nous l'indiquera.

Sur le titre 'True Skool' apparaît Roots Manuva au microphone pour un titre dance hall dans l'air du temps. Classique et entêtant ! Le leader incontesté de l'écurie Big Dada ne pouvait manquer l'occasion de bosser pour ses deux boss qui le lui rendent bien soit dit en passant !

Coldcut is a musical monument. Since 1986, Jonathon More and Matt Black always focused on Music and its evolution. With their own releases (Hey kids, what time is it ? in 1987, Philosophy in 1994 and the great Let Us Play in 1997) and with the creation in the Nineties of labels become worships and essential of Ninja Tune, Ntone and Big Dada. As much the statement, one owes them much !

As their radio shows Solid Steel, they don't have a style : fans of hip hop, trip hop, reggae, techno, jazz, house... will find interest in listening this eclecticism. 2006 is the year Coldcut offers us a new album 'Sound Mirrors", reflection of all these kinds of styles which make the musical landscape of our new millenium. For sure it is the best album of their long and illustrious career. Their knowledges of production was never also obvious just like their love for the music. Their ideas never were also varied or interesting, leaving room to many respected guests like Jon Spencer from Spencer Blues, the intellectual rapper Saul Williams or Mike Ladd, who bring all to their part to this contemporary musical patchwork. Yes, it is a opus which is deep, brilliant, intelligent and committed. Perhaps even a major album, time will indicate it to us.

On 'True Skool' appears Roots Manuva on the microphone for a new classic dance hall track . The uncontested leader of the Big Dada crew could not miss the occasion to work for his two boss ! Or his grand-fathers !
