Les Jamaicains ont depuis toujours le goût des reprises y apportant systématiquement leur propre touche. De Rocksteady au début, de Ska par la suite et bien entendu de Reggae ! Tout y est passé et plus particulièrement le chanteur noir le plus blanc de la planète Michael Jackson qui a eu la chance de voir de nombreux morceaux repris à la sauce jamaicaine. Puis, à vrai dire, il y a une forte demande, la preuve en est que l'on retrouve très souvent ces titres sur les dubplates et même de la part de chanteurs Roots.
La reprise de "Billie Jean" fait partie de ces titres cultes qui traversent les âges et restent une véritable référence. L'histoire qui existe autour de titre est d'ailleurs étonnante et mystérieuse. Plusieurs sources se targuent de la création du riddim "Billy Jean" aussi appelé "Get a Lick" ou "Round Chim Cherry", qui d'ailleurs ne trouvera son nom qu'après le hit de Shinehead au milieu des années 80. Selon certains, il semblerait qu'il ait été créé par les Wailers, pour Bob Marley. Personne n'en saura plus mais qu'importe c'est Shinehead qui le popularisa faisant forte impression.
A cette époque, Shinehead vient de quitter le Downbeat International Sound pour le African Love, ce "transfert" représente un tournant dans la carrière du jeune DJ chanteur. Il montre l'étendu de son talent allant même jusqu'au imiter Michael, avec ses "hee, eeh eeh, wow". Une véritable tuerie !
