Carl Douglas, jamaicain d'origine, était un habitué des charts. Vous connaissez tous plusieurs de ses titres sans savoir qu'il était derrière. Il a fondé Kool & The Gang mais avant cela il opérait en solo en tant que chanteur soul puis dès le début des années 70 participe aux prémices du disco.
C'est en 1973 qu'il sort un hit universel "Kung Fu Fighting" qui fait référence à cette période où les arts martiaux étaient à la mode, Hollywood se passionnait pour le cinéma d'action asiatique dont Bruce Lee devenue star mondiale était le symbole hégémonique. J'ai toujours eu une affection particulière pour ce titre malgré le côté désuet qu'il revêt aux oreilles de plusieurs.
Grâce au label Echobeach, "Kung Fu Fighting" a gagné une séance de relooking à travers un album regroupant 16 remixes. Pole, Kid Loco, Seeed, Adrian Sherwood entre autres se sont parés d'un kimono et d'un nunchaku pour nous faire découvrir d'une autre façon Carl Douglas, tantôt breakbeat, tantôt lounge... Cela reste la réinterprétation dub qui convient à "Kung Fu Fighting" rempli d'échos et de reverbs. Finalement tous les styles lui conviennent, un vrai titre tout terrain !
Douglas Carl, jamaicain guy, is accustomed of the charts. You know for sure all several tracks without knowing that he is behind. he founded Kool & The Gang but before tha, he was a soul singer in solo at the beginning of the Seventies which took part in the first steps of the disco music.
