Continuons notre tour du monde musical ! Après l'Afrique du Sud, les USA, petit arrêt au Japon pour vous parler de Hajime Yoshizawa, un de mes producteurs favoris de nu-jazz, broken-beat. Celui qui m'a conquis avec l'album qu'il avait produit pour Isabelle Antena (magnifique chanteuse française) se voit réédité pour le continent européen de ses maxis les plus marquants. Le EP "European Edition Volume 1" est incontournable. Chaque titre, chaque remix sont aussi accrocheurs qu'apaisants. Je dois en retenir un, et ce sera le remix de Jimpster de "Endless Bow", tout bonnement génial !
Let's continue our worldwide musical trip! After South Africa, The USA, a stop-over in Japan to present you Hajime Yoshizawa, one of my favourite nu-jazz and broken-beat producer. The one who won me with the album he produced for the splendid French signer Isabelle Antena, has the right to be reissued for the European continent of his most notable Eps. The EP "European Edition Volume 1" is inevitable. Every track, every remix are as attracting as comforting. If I must keep one, I would select the Jimpster's remix of "Endless Bow", simply brilliant!
I am from the generation who listened to Nineties hip-hop, the one of Tribe Called Quest. I am and will be a fan of the flow, of the style of Q-Tip who "marked" my mind at this time. His solo album, "The Renaissance", is going to be out soon and it sounds excellent. Samples are all well selected and the first single "Gettin' Up" gives us a vision of this happy air that Q-Tip distributes. An uptempo soul hip-hop with a Q-Tip dressep up in half Davy Crockett (hat) and half Michael Jackson (red jacket).
Encore une histoire de choriste qui avait tellement de talent qu'elle a fini par percer, c'est celle de Stephanie McKay, chanteuse du Bronx qui a travaillé sur des projets prestigieux tels que ceux de Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky ou encore Roy Hargrove. Elle eut même la chance d'avoir des producteurs dont beaucoup rêvent, Geoff Barrow de Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna. Ce mois-ci sort un second album, "Tell It Like It Is", de celle que j'avais découvert avec le titre "Take Me Over", sorti sur Grand Central (à écouter d'urgence). L'album est influencé autant par la soul que le funk rock des années 70 ainsi que le hip-hop, à travers notamment un message social omniprésent et c'est un vrai régal. Ceux qui recherchent par lassitude une autre Estelle, ne cherchez pas plus loin (je la trouve encore meilleure !).
One more story about a chorist who had enought talent to get her own career. It's the one of StephanieMcKay, Bronx native singer, who worked on pretigious projects sur as ones of Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky ou encore Roy Hargrove. She had the luck to work on her own project with famous producers such as Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Soulive, DJ Spinna. This mounth is released the second album, "Tell It Like It Is", of the woman I discovered thanks to the song "Take Me Over", out on Grand Central Label (Liten to it urgently!). This album is influenced by soul music, seventies funk-rock and hip-hop, through a omnipresent social message. I love this album. For those who search an other Estelle (because your're fed up with), here is the solution (I think McKay is better than her!)
C'est par inspiration hasardeuse que je me suis renseigné sur Internet sur la scène musicale sud-africaine. Pourquoi ? Aucune idée. Pour quel résultat ? Une bonne surprise qui s'appelle Kentphonik, soit 2 musiciens producteurs de musique house. Oui oui, il y a bien de la musique house made in Afrique du Sud, vraiment excellente, que Kent et Tumi tentent depuis 3 ans de développer. Très inspiré par la house de New York, Kentphonik cultive une particularité typiquement africaine pour se démarquer, utilisant notamment les timbres de voix féminines locales comme celle de Khensy sur "Hiya Kaya", morceau empreint d'un romantisme avec une déclaration d'amour touchante. En écoute le remix Rocco Deep qui m'a emballé.
It is by an hazardous inspiration I searched on the web about south african musical scene. Pourquoi? No idea. For what result? A good surprise called Kentphonik, 2 musicians and house music producers. Yes yes, there is a lot of house made in music Southern Africa, really good, that Kent and Tumi have been trying to develop for 3 years. Very inspired by NYC house, Kentphonik cultivates a typical african singularity, notably by using female local voices as the one of Khensy on "Hiya Kaya", a track imprints of a Romanticism with a lovely statement. You listen the Rocco Deep remix, my favourite one.
It's a come-back to real life and the restart of all habits, to prepare your satchel, to sharpen your pencils, to wear your new clothes, to see again your friends you leave and to listen to the compilation of Rentrée. In the menu of 2008, always eclecticism, always rare stuff with a suspicion of surprises because even traditions and habits have the right to conceal surprises. So good courage in all and enjoy listening.

What Planet Is This ?!, is the new project of French guys, The Toy Commander and CanBlaster. I discovered CanBlaster with a remix he did for Wax Taylor and with his incredible mix "As Heard On Radio VCH". What Planet Is This ?! is perhaps the best symbol of this new generation of producers-Djs who listened during their teenage time, the 2 Many DJs, the Daft Punk, the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim or Basement Jaxx. The track "Rock Stage", with vocals of Parisians Revolte, is a pure nowadays bomb. Can't wait for new tracks!
D Kay & Epsilon, soit David Kulenkampff et D. Drobnjakovic, sont en quelques années devenus d'excellents producteurs d'une Drum'n Bass festive. "Barcelona" est un titre de 2003 mais réédité cette année avec un featuring de Stamina. Son nom l'indiquant, ce morceau est voué aux ambiances joyeuses de plage, à une jeunesse pleine d'énergie positive et rappelle certaines productions brésiliennes comme celle de DJ Marky et son mythique "LK" sur lequel posait déjà Stamina. Viva la Drum'n Bass et clin d'oeil à la personne qui m'a laissé un commentaire hier!
D Kay & Epsilon, aka David Kulenkampff and D. Drobnjakovic, are in few years become excellent producer of Drum'n Bass. "Barcelona" is a 2003 track, reedited this year with a featuring of Stamina. As its title mentions, this track is perfect for beach happy atmosphears, dedicated to the youth full of positiv energy and reminds some Brasilian productions as DJ Marky's ones and his anthem song, "LK", on which Stamina featured too. Viva la Drum'n Bass!
Ben Manzone est New-Yorkais, DJ reconnu mais peu connu et recommandé par Mike du label Italians Do It Better. Une découverte pour moi avec son dernier mix "Do This World A Favor" qui est une bombe en forme de boule à facette, de la disco et du funk qui fait transpirer de bonheur. Madlib est de retour, et en grande forme pour couronner le tout. Cette fois-ci, c'est avec son projet Beat Konducta et un cinquième volume, peut-être son meilleur d'après moi. Une fois de plus, on ressent un hommage à J-Dilla dont la mort inspire encore et encore. L'album se termine avec "Anthenagin (?)", morceau très Wax Taylor, un hip-hop où la classe rencontre l'émotion, la nostalgie la beauté. Tout bonnement sublime.

Un album entier d'une de mes idoles Drum'n Bass, l'homme aux dents dorés, l'ex de Bjork, l'un des plus talentueux graffeurs, le totalement barré et surdoué, Goldie qui revient avec une bande orginale de son propre film "Sine Tempus". Composé en 2004 mais repoussé pour différentes raisons, cet album est un coup de coeur empreint de nostalgie tant les atmosphères rappellent celles du mythique "Timeless", son premier album sorti il y a plus de 10 ans. It is the big surprise of the end of summer. A whole album of one of my Drum'n Bass idols, the man with gilded teeth, the ex boyfriend of Bjork, the completely crazy talented Goldie who comes back with an soundtrack of his movie "Sine Tempus". Recorded in 2004 but pushed back for different reasons, this album is a blow of heart imprinted so much by nostalgia, atmospheres reminds me those of his mythical "Timeless", first album released more than 10 years ago. Déjà emballé par un premier opus accrocheur, j'étais curieux découvrir ce que le groupe anglo-suédois Cirkus allait proposer. La même équipe, toujours autant de talent et d'intelligence, présentent les meilleurs gages. Pour preuve ce premier titre qui sera sur le prochain album, "Bells", magnifique ode sur la nature humaine (son mauvais côté tout du moins !). Je vous laisse découvrir le clip, une animation en noir et blanc métaphorique tout simplement splendide.
Already loving their first LP, I was curious to discover what the English-Swediws bang, Cirkus, was going to offer for their second opus. Same team, always so much talent and intelligence, present some guarantees but could we be sure? We have the answer now with a first track, "Bells", a splendid ode on human nature (its poor side at least!). I let you discover the music video, a simply wonderful animation in black and white.
On peut être éloigné de milliers de kilomètres et avoir des liens forts. Cette connivence, on la retrouve entre l'Australie et l'Allemagne, entre le groupe australien Cut Copy, membre de l'incroyable écurie du label Modular (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolfmother, New Young Pony Club entre autre) et le petit génie allemand Boys Noize. Le tube de Cut Copy "Lights & Music" maintes fois remixé, est revisité avec une inspiration électro attachante, démontrant tout le talent à remixer de Boys Noize (je pense à celui de Feist notamment). "Lights & Music (Boys Noize Remix)" est frais, léger et terriblement urbain.

This connivance, you can find it between Australia and Germany, between the Australian band, Cut Copy, member of the unconvincing crew of the excellent -label, Modular (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolfmother, New Young Pony Club among others) and the German genius, Boys Noize. The hit of Cut Copy "Lights & Music" remixed many times, is remixed with an engaging electro inspiration, showing all remixing talent of Boys Noize (I think of the Feist's one notably). "Lights &Music (boys Noize Remix)" is cool, light and absolutely urban.
Bombist est à mes yeux le digne successeur de J-Star. A savoir le meilleur bootlegger reggae,, c'est-à-dire, un petit riddim jamaicain bien senti sur lequel il suffit de trouver l'acapella hip-hop, r'n'b ou pop qui va bien. Ca a l'air facile comme cela mais rares sont les associations qui marchent véritablement. Le dernier inventé par Bombist est de poser la voix de Beyonce et son titre "Ring The Alarm" sur le riddim multi-utilisé "Judgement Time". Et ça fonctionne à la perfection. Un titre pour bien terminer l'été en beauté.
Bombist is according to methe worthy successor of J-Star. I mean the best producer of reggae bootlegs, put a good and old school jamaican riddim on which you add a hip-hop or R'nB or pop acapella which goes well. This seems easy but rare are the associations which really works. The last inventing by Bombist is to put down the voice of Beyonce and her track "Ring The Alarm" on the multi-used riddim "Judgement Time". And it works perfectly. Definetly the tune for this end of summer.

Des nappes de synthé mélodiques agrémentées d'une basse déglinguée, un morceau à la Hervé au tempo ralenti. Un vrai délice !

Pour le titre "I Can't Wait For Love", son association avec Jonny L, un des grands de la Drum'n Bass, fonctionne à merveille, de l'électro house à la fois old et new school. L'impatience d'amour est telle que l'inspiration semble s'être magnifiée. Sorti sur le bon label Destined, "I Can't Wait For Love" ressemble déjà à un classique. Il le deviendra certainement.

And least what I can write, is the English Matti Schwartz, who has hiding from many different nicknames since a dozen years, is loyal to the reputation. On the track " I Can't Wait For Love ", his association with Jonny L, one of the big guy of Drum' n Bass, works in marvel, an electro house at the same time old and new school. The impatience of love is such as the inspiration seems to have been idealized. Released on the good label, Destined, " I Can't Wait For Love " already sounds in a classic. It will indeed become one.
Lors d'un concert de Mark Ronson, j'avais découvert ce que je pensais être une chanteuse de second rang, alors qu'elle assura un tour de force surclassant Amy Winehouse sur le titre "Valerie". Grâce à Fluxblog, j'ai le nom de cette artiste, Rox, et le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est que Mark Ronson est un dénicheur de talents incroyable, mettant au service de ses perles vocales des productions dont je ne me lasse pas. "My Baby Left Me" sonne comme du Mark Ronson mais glorifié par le chant, le timbre et l'émotion de Rox qui est subjugante.
During a live show of Mark Ronson, I discovered of what I thought to be an insignificant chorist, while she assured an outclassing feat Amy Winehouse on track "Valerie". Thanks to Fluxblog, I have the name of this artist, Rox, and at least what it is possible to say, is that Mark Ronson is an incredible finder of talents, bringing into service of these vocal pearls his productions of which I do not get tired. En écoutant le dernier Recloose, je me suis remis à écouter les productions du label Sonar Kollektiv. L'occasion de réentendre un EP sorti l'année dernière "Unforgiven" de Roland Appel, membre du duo Fauna Flash. D'ailleurs Mr Scruff et Jazzanova qui viennent de sortir un mix en guise de 7e volume de la série Southport que je vous conseille, l'ont repris. Il faut dire que "Unforgiven" est un bijou à mi-chemin entre de la house et de l'ambient, qui ensorcelle les esprits.
By listening to the last Recloose's EP, I started relistening to all productions of the label Sonar Kollektiv. The occasion to rediscover an EP released last year "Unforgiven" of Roland Appel, member of the duet Fauna Flash. Besides Mr Scruff and Jazzanova who have just made a mix for the 7th volume of Southport compilation which I recommend you, took it back. It is necessary to say that "Unforgiven" is a jewel halfway between house and ambient techno music, which bewitches your mind.
