C'est la nouvelle sensation hollandaise, à savoir Rejected derrière lequel se cachent Edwin Oosterwal et Joris Voorn. Leur titre "Let's Go Juno" est une pure bombe de boîte de nuit. A mi-chemin entre la house et la techno, ce morceau est envoûtant et énergique. Un pont parfait entre les deux styles.
It's the new Dutch sensation, Rejected composed by Edwin Oosterwal and Joris Voorn. Their track "Let's Go Juno" is a massive bomb for dancefloors. Between house and techno music, this tune is as sweet as energic. U perfect link between the two styles.
Afrique un jour, Afrique toujours ! Alors que les musiques aux sonorités africaines et plus particulièrement le Kuduro explosent dans toute la blogosphère (cf. la mixtape de Radioclit...), je continue à découvrir toutes les facettes de la musique électronique africaine. Et ils sont sacrément nombreux mais aussi talentueux ! Mon dernier coup de coeur vient du Congo, s'appelle Afefe Iku, découvert à travers un remix qu'il a fait pour Radiohead, et vient de sortir un superbe maxi de soul et deep house tribal, "Artifacts Of Pottery Vessels". Le morceau "Mirror Dance" est un bijou de synth-tech soul, au groove incroyable.
Africa for ever! During the explosion of new African music and especially of Kuduro all over the blogosphere (check the mixtape of Radioclit), I continue my discovery of electronic African scene. And what I must admit, it is big and full of talents! My last favourite comes from Congo, names Afefe Iku, discovered foir the first time through his remix of a Radiohead's track. He just released a great EP of tribal soul and deep house music, "Artifacts Of Pottery Vessels". The song "Mirror Dance" is a pure bomb of synth-tech soul with a wonderful groove.
Cette fin d'année 2008 est un vrai délice. Les bonnes sorties tant de maxis que d'albums sont légion. Je dois admettre que la sortie sur Blue Note du nouvel opus de Jazzanova est un sacré événement. Véritables ouvriers de la musique de goût (entre la gestion de leur excellent label Sonar Kollektiv, les émissions de radio, les mixes, les compilations "Secret Love", "Belle & Fou"...), ils ne chôment jamais et ont réussi à donner un successeur à "In Between" sorti en 2002. Que vaut donc "Of All The Things" ? Tout d'abord, il s'agit d'un album qui n'a plus grand chose d'électronique mais qui conserve le goût sucré et élégant propre à Jazzanova. Les six Berlinois s'en sont donné à coeur joie pour réaliser un magnifique album de nu-jazz enregistré avec des musiciens rencontrés un peu partout dans le monde lors de leurs périples. "Of All The Things" est également un disque où les collaborations ne sont pas là pour faire joli et vendre des copies mais plutôt pour apporter du talent et des idées : de Leon Ware (véritable pape et légende de la soul) à Phonte (MC du groupe hip-hop Little Brother) en passant par Dwele (jeune talent de la soul made in Detroit) et Ben Westbeech qui, sur "I Can See", est toujours dans les bons coups (cf. avec DJ Marky, Kraak & Smaak, DJ Die, Clipz...) . Vous l'avez compris, ce deuxième album de Jazzanova est une réussite totale !
The end of year 2008 is really a delight. The good new releases both EP's and LP's are many. I must suppose that the release on Blue Note of the new opus of Jazzanova is a sacred event. Real workers of tasteful music (between the management of their excellent label Sonar Kollektiv, the radio shows, mixes and their compilations " Secret Love", "Belle & Fou"), they never stop working and succeeded in giving a successor in "In Between" come out in 2002. What is therefore worth "Of All The Things"? First of all, it is about an album which is far from electronic music but that keeps sweet and smart taste music typically Jazzanova's touch. The six Berliners must have taken pleasure to accomplish a splendid album of nu-jazz recorded with musicians met everywhere in the world during their journeys. "Of All The Things" is also a disc where collaboration is not there to make pretty and sell copies but rather to bring talent and ideas: from Leon Ware (true pope and legend of soul music) to Phonte (MC of the hip-hop band Little Brother) or Dwele (young talent of the soul made in Detroit) and Ben Westbeech who, on "I Can See", is always in good blows (check his featurings with DJ Marky, Kraak and Smaak, DJ Die, Clipz...). You may have understood , this second album of Jazzanova is a complete success!
Le métissage devrait être perpétuellement célébré ! La magie de la fusion des genres est bien souvent une réussite. Attardons nous sur la musique indienne qui s'immisça dans les styles musicaux à travers Asian Dub Foundation, Fun-Da-Mental, TransGlobal Underground pour l'électro et la techno, Talvin Singh pour la drum'n'bass. Restait au raga de se mélanger au ragga, bref du dubstep à la sauce indo-pakistanaise, mélange de musique indienne, de rythmique hip hop et de dub. Dusk alias Dan Frampton & Blackdown alias Martin Clark sont devenus les premiers à poser les bases de sonorités indiennes, de tablas se fondant dans des sub-basses et breakbeats midtempo. Du très très bon !
Interbreeding should be forever celebrated! The magic of styles fusion is very often a success. Let us delay us on Indian music which interfered in various musical styles across Asian Dub Foundation, Fun-Da-Mental, TransGlobal Underground for electro and techno music, Talvin ingh for drum'n'bass. We miss raga (Indian Music) mixed with ragga & dub, well dubstep with a taste of Indo-Pakistano sounds, mixture of hip hop beats and dub effects... Dusk, aka Dan Frampton, and Blackdown, aka Martin Clark, become the first to lay foundations for Indian tones, of tablas blended in with sub-bass and midtempo breaks. Very very good!
Attention décollage assuré pour l'espace, la planète Mars plus exactement ! Vos tympans vont prendre cher avec l'écrasant, le surpuissant, le découffant, bref le stratosphérique "Mars" de Fake Blood. C'est l'assurance de retourner les dancefloors dans 100% des cas. J'en suis encore tout renversé !

La réalité dépasse parfois les rêves les plus fous. Comment oser imaginer qu'un classique de la house tel que "Promised Land" de Joe Smooth (1989 tout de même) puisse être repris de façon aussi exceptionnelle et même parfait ? La touche soul de Findlay Brown accompagnée d'arrangements délicats et mélangée par la patte de Pilooski qui a augmenté le tempo pour le rendre plus disco offre à "Promised Land", le statut de mythe.
Reality is sometimes better than crazy dreams. How would I imagine one day that a house classic as Joe Smooth's "Promised Land" (1989) could be covered with so much perfection? The soul touch of white singer Findlay Brown accompanied of delicate arrangements and mixed with the touch of Pilooski who makes it more uptempo to be more disco, offers to "Promised Land" the status of myth.
C'est l'histoire d'une rencontre extraordinaire entre Gruff Rhys des Super Furry Animals et de Boom Bip que j'adore. De cette rencontre est né le projet Neon Neon et l'excellent album "Stainless Style", l'un des meilleurs disques de l'année très influencé par les sonorités eighties. Il n'y a qu'à entendre "I Lust U", de l'electroclash pop sucrée qui traite de la prostitution de luxe. La chanteuse Cate Le Bon y est tout simplement merveilleuse.
It's the story of an extraodinary meeting between Gruff Rhys of The Super Furry Animals and Boom Bip I love so much. Then were founded the project Neon Neon and its great album "Stainless Style", one of the best 2008 albums full of 80's influences. Just take a time to listen to "I Lust U", sweet electroclash pop, which is about luxuray prostitution. The singer Cate Le Bon is so wonderful on this track.
Si, comme certains le prétendent, la série 24 Heures avec la présence d'un président américain noir a montré le chemin à l'élection bien réelle d'Obama, alors j'ai espoir avec la série "Flight of the Conchords" d'entendre sur les grands médias de la musique non formatée. Il faut dire qu'avec la chanson "She's So Hot", titre hip-hop ragga sexiste et très clownesque, on se met à croire qu'un Roots Manuva et son "Witness" finisse à une heure de grande écoute. Yes, we can!
If, as some says, 24:00 TV series with its black American president would help the vicotry of Obama, I now do hope with the TV serie "Flight of the Conchords" by listening on big channels and radio, to non-formated commercial music. We must admit with a song "She's So Hot", funny sexist hip-hop ragga track, we can dream viewing Roots Manuva and his "Witness" played during prime-time. Yes, we can !
J'ai attendu les résultats des élections et la victoire d'Obama pour présenter le nouveau titre de Pirahnahead "Come 2gether", véritable tribute avant l'heure de cet événement qui fera date (on verra cela dans quelques années tout de même). Un morceau de deep house plutôt tribal avec des bouts de discours du nouveau président des USA, entrecoupés de paroles de Dr. Martin Luther King. Un objet collector pour assouvoir la mystification du premier président américain de couleur.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, Drop Music est un label anglais de house. Rien que la liste des artistes présents sur Drop Music incite au respect : Inland Knights, Johnny Fiasco, Joshua Heath, Kinky Movement... Que le temps passe vite car il fête ses 10 ans (je me sens vieux tout d'un coup !) avec une compilation chaudement recommandée "Dust Till Dawn : 10 Years Of Drop Music" mixé par Crazy P. Difficile de choisir un titre mais mon choix se porte sur un morceau représentatif des productions qui sortent de chez Drop Music, "Sex Panther" des Candy Dealers.
For those who don't know, Drop Music is a UK house label. When you discover the artists of Drop Music, totally respect : Inland Knights, Johnny Fiasco, Joshua Heath, Kinky Movement... Time goes too fast because the label is now 10 years old (I feel old now!) with a highly recommanded compilation "Dust Till Dawn : 10 Years Of Drop Music" mixed by Crazy P. It was hard for me to select one track but my choice was a tune which represents the best of Drop Music releases, "Sex Panther" of the Candy Dealers.
Alors qu'il fait un froid de canard à Paris, les anglais de Friendly Fires, sensation pop rock de cet automne, célèbrent la capitale de l'amour. En attendant qu'ils viennent s'y installer (ils l'ont promis), écoutez donc le remix d'Aeroplane, duo belge qui fait des merveilles en tant que remixeurs. A l'image de l'ambivalence de Paris, ce titre est trop rapide pour être downtempo, et trop lent pour passer en soirée, mais il est totalement planant.

Until they come to become established here (they promised it), listen therefore to the remix of Aeroplane, Belgian duo who makes marvels as remixers. Just like the ambivalence of Paris, this track is too fast to be downtempo, and too slow for club play, but it is completely gliding.

Gabriella Cilmi est australienne, jeune (18 ans), plutôt mignonne ! A l'opposé de Amy Winehouse, elle est saine et simple mais partage avec la diva déséquilibrée anglaise mais aussi Emiliana Torrini, un timbre de voix plein d'émotions. "Sweet About Me", son dernier single, est un tube en puissance, léger et acidulé.
Gabriella Cilmi is Australian, young (18 years old), really beautiful ! At the inverse of Amy Winehoyse, she is "safe" and simple but share with the English drugged diva but also Emiliana Torrini, a great voice full of emotions. "Sweet About Me", her last single, is a hit, also light and sweet.
C'est la crise ! Donc retour aux fondamentaux, à l'argent liquide (à cacher dans sous son matelas), aux politiques qui tels des super héros vont nous sortir du pétrin et au hip-hop comme porte-parole des défavorisés, des ghettoisés, des pauvres. Le tout produit par mark Ronson.

Vous connaissiez certainement les productions 8bits issues des sons de jeu vidéo des années 80 et 90 (notamment Nintendo). Avec le morceau du MC et producteur anglais Lotek, leader du groupe (défunt ?) Lotek Hifi, place à l'ère moderne où ce sont tous les sons, jingles, musiques que nous retrouvons dans Windows. "Ctrl Alt Del", nom du morceau, semble dès la première écoute familier, logique me direz-vous ! C'est aussi drôle que bon. Quand paroles et instrumentaux nous parlent de notre quotidien...

Impossible de résister à sa voix d'adolescente répétant à tue tête "Hardcore Girls" soutenue par une association basse-break typiquement Fidget.

Le vaillants new-yorkais The Rapture viennent de nous gâter avec une "K7 Tapes". Un mix pour fêter l'amour qu'ils ont pour la musique de la fin des années 70 et début des années 80 avec tout de même quelques tracks d'aujourd'hui pour ne pas tomber dans la totale nostalgie. Parmi les pépites, un morceau que je ne connaissais pas et qui me hante depuis la première écoute "I'm An Indian Too" de Don Armando's Second Avenue Rumba Band, entre disco-funk et générique de dessin animé. Kitsch pour certains, culte pour d'autres !

Maybe kitsch for some, cult for others!
Cela fait déjà un certain temps que je mets sur ce blog en avant une influence africaine grandissante dans la musique occidentale. Et ce n'est pas prêt de s'arrêter avec la nouvelle sensation de Pretoria, Elvis Maswanganyi aussi appelé DJ Mujava. Celui qui a grandi dans un township rempli de serials killers, a des sons pleins la tête qu'il matérialise grâce à un ordinateur offert par son frère. Pour l'anecdote, le bouche à l'oreille est assuré par les taxis (véridique !) puis les "communitys stations", radios locales sud-africaines. Toute la ville vit au son de DJ Mujava ! Puis sa musique s'étend à d'autres régions pour finir par être repéré par le label électronique Warp qui sort une bombe minimale "Township Funk". La basse rappelle celles de Laurent Garnier, le beat est 100% made in africa quoique Mia, Diplo, Radioclit ont commencé à utiliser ce type de rythmiques. Quant au clip, c'est une ghetto party avec une version africaine de danseurs tecktonik !
For couple of months, I have been speaking about a bigger and bigger african influence in occidental musical scene. And it won't stop with the new sensation of Pretoria, Elvis Maswanganyi also named DJ Mujava. He grew up in a township full of serials killers but he always dreamed about sounds, music... Thanks to a computer offered by his brother, DJ Mujava started productions and the buzz started with the taxis cabs which played his tracks, then the "communitys radio stations". All the town with DJ Mujava's sounds! Then his music was found by the electronic UK label Warp which releases "Township Funk", a pure minimal bomb. The bassline reminds me the ones of Laurent Garnier, the beat is 100% made in africa even if Mia,, Diplo or Diplo started to use this kind of rythms. The music video is a ghetto party with an african version of tecktonik dancers!
