Even if I appreciate the sound, the beats of nowadays, I have a special and extreme appreciation of old-school which continues to resound in me. It is not a question of nostalgia, a kind of “it was were better before”. The old-school has a characteristic which is clean for him and makes its force according to me : to discover a new track and to have this special feeling to know it because it is clearly identified, referring at one time that we knew or not.

It is to support this feeling that Nike ordered to celebrate the 25 years birthday of the mythic shoe, Nike Air Force One, a tune with DJ Premier. To bring back again, this hip-hop just being born with a clear & simple beat far from the current productions, a traditional and terribly effective sample. Only good vibes, would say a Jamaican. In short a classic!

It is precisely the title of the track, “Classic”, which is a production of DJ Premier with a gathering of MCs which makes dream, where each period 80-90-00 is represented : KRS-One like Rakim, who began in 1987, Nas in 1994 and Kanye West in 2004. The fundamentals are well respected, lyrics, a wonderful sample “Dance The Kung-Fu” of Carl Douglas. A vibrating homage to hip-hop, a generations bridge which prove once more that hip-hop is there for a long time and it is so much better.

J Dilla - Nothing Like This (2007)

Beaucoup d'artistes hip-hop ont utilisé ses instrumentaux comme Busta Rhymes ("Can't Hold The Torch"), ou encore The Roots ("Can't Stop This").

God Bless J Dilla...

To commemorate the death of the producer James Yancey, alias J Dilla (or Jay Dee) one year ago, Stones Throw releases for the first time in CD version the long EP "Ruff Draft" released in 2003 only in vinyl. Still today the undergroung hip-hop scene is in mourning of the producer from Detroit who began in 1995 with A Tribe Called Quest and multiplied collaborations such as The Pharcyde (“Runnin” and “Drop”), De La Soul (“Stake Is High”) or through his own project Slum Village (Fantastic vol. 2).

He start his solo carrier by joining Stones Throw and Madlib with who he founded the mythical duet Jaylib. During the months which followed his death, all his last productions allowed stage his absence. Many hip-hop artists used his instrumentals like Busta Rhymes (“Can't Hold The Torch”), or The Roots (“Can't Stop This”). “Ruff Draft” is thus republished in order to (re)discover an album full of talent and experiments. We should be acknowledged it was a snap and to listen it one more time knowing that J Dilla is not any more alive, gives a bitter and unfinished feeling and we would liked to discover the followings tracks of “Reckless Driving”, “Take Notice” and their synthetisers samples from the Seventies, of “Crushin' (Yeeeeaah!)” when the funk is in downtempo mode making a love declaration of the opposed sex, “Wild” and the nice country hip-hop.

“Nothing Like This” is one of the main tracks of J Dilla because it is certainly one of the most diverting. The beats and the sound deconstruction become an abstract, universal and dreamed ballad. Its listening to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death will prove for sure this tune is timeless and he was so talented. God Bless J Dilla…

Yael - 100 Percent Light (2007)

There are two Yael. Like the two faces of the first EP of Yael and The Palmtrees, published on the famous Austrian label G-Stone. “Alice” on side A, “100 Percent Light” on face B. The first track illustrates the incredible talent of pop writing, vocal emotion and instrumental smoothness of Yael Deckeldaum. Obviously sharing his life between Austria and Israel (you must understand Yiddish to discover on her myspace place the last news and announcements), this young and pretty young woman develops a talent such as Dido, even Suzanne Vega. It is smooth, pretty, soulful, but it is not what interests us here.

If Yael Deckeldaum writes and composes all tracks of the band, the contribution of The Palmtrees appears much more on “100 Percent Light”. The tune reminds irremediably Cirkus, the recent project including Neneh Cherry, and the revival of a bristol based sound we have been assisting for a few months. More the spirit of Cup of Tea releases that Portishead ones with the will of an ambitious sound : floating breaks, violins in remote tablecloths, saturated but polished guitars - the girl is rather kind of non-violent. On scene, Yael, Jonathan Levy (bass, electric guitar), Dani Daromi (electric guitar), Shaul Eshet (synthetizor) and Nir Mantsur (keyboards) acquired a recent reputation besides, still to confirm.

The band envisage to release its first album this summer, always on G-Stone - while Yael continues to be occupied by a lot of projects. She will play with Jerusalem Travellers next May but we hope to see her in Paris very soon with a complete repertory, in order to check if the last viennese lucky find deserves more than a simple quotation, for “Alice”, in the tracklist of an TV episode of "The L World". The first available stage videos seem to show that the promises can be held. Check here.

For couple of years, I have waited for the album of the Austrian duet Makossa & Megablast, members of the G-Stone team, label which released the EPs of the Viennese guys. The two friends saw their EP “Like A Rocket / Kunuaka” at the first place on the playlist of French Radio Nova last year and nominated at the awards of Gilles Peterson's show. And the buzz was high and high around their album.

It's time now, it is official and soon available : “Kunuaka” is the first album of these specialists in a general-purpose, futuristic and dynamic dub. Makossa & Megablast have done a fantastic exploit by dynamiting all borders, creating real air lanes amalgamating msuic styles from all continents, afro-electro with Brazilian sounds while passing by cuban rhythms, always under influences from Jamaica and Europe. All tracks are excellent, the guests are many and good : a diamonds groove, a musical pearl ! Here they are at the Hall Of Fame of the best producers with an album than I can only qualify as a major one.

“Mama”. A planing synthetisor transports you for this track to a humanistic and religious message with the African songs reminding incantations with the Senegalese singer 3gga and the toast of the english & jamaican MC Ras-Tweed. No mater your belief, your god, we are all the children of a “Mama”!

VIDEO : Ed Banger Compilation Vol. 2 (2007)

The parisian label of Pedro Winter has been being at the top side for couple of months. Each release of EPs and LPs has a great success. Now it is 4 years old, time for a new compilation.

Let's start with Mr Oizo and an introduction of one minute presenting all artists of the compilation. Then a track of Uffie, the French MIA, the next "Daft Punk" Justice. Let's continue with DJ Mehdi, Mr Flash who impressed me with "Disco Dynamite", I felt in love (one more time !) of the tune of Sebastian "Greel" and many more.

A compilation to listen, and listen and listen with pleasure.

Joyeux anniversaire Ed Banger !
SPECIAL MENTION for the teaser, I love it. Happy birthday Ed Banger!

Simian Mobile Disco - It's The Beat (2007)

D'ailleurs "It's The Beat" rappelle les morceaux de Uffie accompagnée de Feadz ("Ready To Uff"). Vive SMD.

Born from ashes of the English band Simian, composer of the pop anthem “Never Be Alone” remixed by Justice, James Ford and Jas Shaw became with Simian Mobile Disco music, the duet of the most asked DJs for London club scene. They are also producers, while working in studio with the Klaxons and the Artic Monkeys. In short all that sounds great and new, are releasing in their hands. They seem to be the UK NERD (Pharrel Williams and Chad Hugo) for pop music.

Simian Mobile Disco do not forsake any detail. After the success of “Never Be Alone”, they released another great tune “Hustler”, a brilliant electro-house with its even more brilliant music video clip (full of sensuality where a score of lesbians top-models kisses each others). Image and sound are undivisable for them and once more their reputation was ensured by Kitsuné, always present where there's something great ! Let us be patient, the album of these future stars (I take the bets !) is announced for June.

Simian Mobile Disco continues its road tour with the new release “It's The Beat”, is an upgraded hip-house, music style very fashionable nowadays, a flow of hip-hop meeting a acid house production. Moreover “It's The Beat” should remind you Uffie's track and productions of Feadz (“Ready To Uff”). Electro beats, many bleeps, one eighties synthetisor and the singer of The Go! TEAM, Ninja, offers a tune full of stubbornness and leding off steam. Long life to SMD!

DJ Mehdi is a special guy, sympathetic, simple, open-minded. Faithful to himself, he is one of those who make advance music decompartmentalizing styles borders. Coming from hip-hop, mixing in the evenings, producing albums (MC Solaar, Assassins, 113…), Dj Mehdi breaks the partitions as well resourcing himself in rock'n'roll as in hip-hop, in reggae as Rn'B.

In 2002, he releaves his first album “(The Story Of Espion”, kind of homing device which charms a lot of people, considering the success which it obtained. he is the first hip-hop producer who left the hip-hop stereotypes that one can see in France through Cut Killer and many others. He is interested thus more and more in electro, it is DJ Mehdi who invited Thomas Bangalter on a track of a French hip-hop band 113 “113 Fout La Merde”. He continues his eclectic explorations and takes part in various projects such as with Kroutrajmé “Des Friandises Pour Ta Bouche”. DJ Mehdi came back in 2006 after entering the Ed Banger Team, with “Lucky Boy”. It is always as well produced, always also percussion. You will be transported easily by this great electro-funk, with for sure efficient on a dancefloor (“I Am Somebody”, “Boggin”, “Always Be An Angel”). Here come the new era of hip-hop at the same time moist and complex, cold and direct.

The release of the EP “Lucky Girl” is the occasion to discover a second reading of the track “Signatune” on which worked Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. This tune has this taste of ostentation from the Eighties, for some that will appear really kitsch and that seems resolutely voluntary on behalf of the two protagonists. One reason ? Check the video clip which reports the life of a Rocky Balboa of car tuning from North of France, who launches out in a competition of SPL, Sound Pressure Level.

The Nomad - Destinations (2007)

: Nightmares On Wax "The Sweetest", Kenneth Bager "Love won't leave me Alone", Quentin Harris "Let's Be Young", Coldcut "Walk A Mile In My Shoes".

A bon entendeur !

Magique..

It is a story of chance. I just discover the fourth volume of “Luftkastellet”, kind of compilation “Hotel Coste” version smart fashion Danish restaurant. Each edition plungs in a Scandinavian atmosphear full of heat, of happyness and the new one which will be released very soon offers new delicate moods at the same time organic and electronic groove. The great well-known artists are present with some unknowns (for me!) : Nightmares One Wax “The Sweetest”, Kenneth Bager “Love Won't Leave Me Alone”, Quentin Harris “Let's Be Young”, Coldcut “Walk A Mile In My Shoes”. Pointed and without ornament!

A name comes out from this fourth volume : The Nomad alias Daimon Schwalrger, New Zealander who began in the Eighties as an old-school hip-hop DJ. Thousands of sets later, he launched out in the production in 1996 with Parl Runga and Ryan Smith within Locust. He started his solo carreer under the name of The Nomad following a first track “One The Beating Track” whose his first album “Movement” into 1998 went out and was the first Drum & Bass album in New Zealand. Increasingly trustful in him, he released couple of albums, “Second Selection”, more downtempo and dub with some nice featurings like Farda P of Rockers Hi-Fi, Charmed 1 and MC Antsman, “Three Level” and “Step 4th” on his own label “Fresh Produce”. If you like eclecticism (at the image of the blog), you will appreciate works of The nomad. His last album “Quinessence” released in 2005 is his best album by far. To the wise!

“Destinations” is an enchanting instrumental tune, which transported me at the end of the Nineties when trip-hop revisited by a new generation of artists such as Terranova, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Kid Loco was up. Without nostalgia, I can't miss this track with a good taste of spleen. Magical…

Arnaud Rebotini - Leviathan (2007)

Arnaud Rebotini is a name which should not tell you something and yet for those who love electronic music, he is a Mister resulting from the seraglio of Versailles where his friends in high school were Nicolas Godin from Air, Etienne de Crécy and Alex Gopher. True pionner, he has always used pseudonyms whose main ones were Zend Avesta in solo or Black Strobe in collaboration with Ivan Smagghe.

As impassioned by the experimental contemporary music as by DJ Shadow or Slayer, Arnaud Rebotini is a producer whose remixes for Oliver Huntemann or Zen Kei, are divine. As at ease in the Cité de la Musique (contemporary music temple in France) as in Rex Club, he develops an organic techno sometimes minimalist, digging a little more the furrow created by Black Strobe. He signed on the label of The Hacker, Good Life, with an EP “The Wood” which is a homage to the Detroit techno, a homage for (grand)-fathers founders. “The Wood” and its hypnotic bassline obviously point out the first productions of Jeff Mills and Robert Hood.

“Leviathan” is the face B of this opus and would deserve the face A. More influenced by the minimalism of American Steve Reich and Terry Riley, Arnaud Rebotini shows a direction of a melancholic groove sense as never I had not been able to listen. An imposing track whose progressive rise offers an fulgurating explosion at the end : 8 minutes and 15 seconds of intense pleasure.

Wolf Myer Orchestra - Soulgate (2007)

Wolf Myer Orchestra & Parov Stelar - Soulgate (feat. Lilith) by Iggy

Wolf Myer is an Austrian guy who officiated as a mananger of the major company Sony Music. In parallel of this job, he plays drums during concerts, lives which have the reputation to stay in the memory of the spectators. An activity to earn money, one second to open out. And finally he decided to launch out completely in the adventure and to be focused on his project: Wolf Myer Orchestra.

His crenel is the nu-jazz, a intimist groove. He is surrounded by about thirty musicians and singers, of whom Parov Stelar to record “Femme fatale”, released on Etage Noir Recordings. Passion, emotion and other main life subjects are the conducting wire of this album. A sharp result rooted in jazz music while exceeding the borders of this style. One begins to sail through the tunes between pop (“Quicksand”, “Hell”), trip-hop (“Get Up” with some sounds like Portishead, “Caught” reminding Massive Attack) and soul-jazz. This analogical and digital mixe develops at the listener a kind of second state of mind where precipitations and rejections do not take place any more to exist. A beautiful work!

“Soulgate” opens the album on a R&B note. There is the impression to discover a track produced by Dr. Dre for Blu Cantrell (“Breathe”). No sample here, only pure composition, Lilith, the singer who will interest for sure some American producers and a wonderful solo of clarinet in bonus!

The Berliner DJ Kaos is a multi-styles artist from the Germanic scene. Beginning in the Terranova band with a trip-hop music (the sumptuous album “Closed The Door” in 1999), Denis “Kaos” Kayne launched out in 2003 in the electro hip-hop experimentation with his project Ghost Cauldron “Invent Modest Fires”, highly recommended. Always inclined with eclecticism, he continues his musical trip with remixes (“Strange Smile” of Markus Lange, “Immer So” of Snax or “Channel Exchange” of Lo-Fi-Fnk).

Kitsune is as well a fashion label proposing of clothes for fashion addicts(customers of the Parisian store Colette) but also of music producing of thematics compilations centered around a mix of electronic music and rock'n'roll. These compilations “Kistuné Maison”, “Kitsuné Love”, “Kitsuné Midgnight” became time afer time for each new release a barometer of the emergent scenes which can be English, American, Japanese, French… as well as a niec advisability of discovering new artists. This label with the bicephalous face French-Japanese is a platform which offers a springboard to new artists with potential thanks to the unconditional fans of Kitsuné, considered as opinion leaders. Digitalism, Simian Disco Mobile, Tomboy, Benjamin Theves start their reputation thanks to these compilations.

Let us return in Kaos who, while joining Canadian Brennan Green and Sal Principato from Liquid Liquid, produces a epic track “Cerebral Tremor”, mixture of funk-punk which reminds The Raptures. In extreme cases of disco music with this slapped guitar, we begin to zigzag during 13 minutes without seeing time spent, transported by these tribal percussions. Impossible to circumvent to heat the atmosphear of any party.

Bonde Do Role - Gasolina (2007)

The “Miami Bass” style popularized thanks to artists such as Diplo, made followers everywhere in the world. I will reconsider soon the emergence of the Fuduro from Africa but interest us in the carioca funk. Resulting from this movement dedicated to the festival, this style mixes hip-hop and electro all while including Brazilian traditional & Brazilian Negroes rhythms. The texts, generally rapped, are inspired by the everyday life in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro where the baile funk was born at the beginning of the 90's.

Bonde Do Role, first signature of Diplo on his label Mad Decent whose objective is to popularize this Brazilian scene, draws without shame in the culture rock'n'roll and the baile funk. Head of this carioca funk movement, some call them Brazilian Beastie Boys. This trio crazy such as CSS, another incredible Brazilian band, shows a freshness and an overflowing energy we discover on their first EP "Melo C Tabaco". Marina, woman with red hair and her two assistants DJs, have just released “Gasolina” and very soon “Solta O Frango” which means “Release the chicken”. What a program!

“Gasolina” is the most dancing track of Bonde Do Role. Completely spontaneous (the track was recorded in one afternoon), “Gasolina” is a small jewel which one appreciates each second of listening, the original version and the remixes, one of Buraka Som Sistema in a eminently kuduro style (African percussions) or the one of Radioclit which transplants vicious electro in "Gasolina", my favourite version you can listen in the review. Obviously recommended!

Grooveman Spot - Hadesugiru (2007)

Grooveman Spot is a Japanese DJ in a pure traditional style. He comes from the north of Japan and grew in Sendai with another famous Japanese DJ, DJ Mitsu. Competition between them or helps, the similarity is so unbelievable that it's difficult to dissociate them. Both are respected for their talent of beatmaker.

Grooveman Spot is despite every aspects a follower, DJ Mitsu having started before him. It is precisely thanks to a remix of a DJ Mitsu's track that Grooveman Spot got a reputatiob. He arrives with a first album which one could accept that paternity could be DJ Mitsu's one. Same artwork or almost, even same titles or almost, same featurings or almost ! And listening does not especially betray the allusion which becomes almost too strong about Grooveman Spot. He does not remain about a huge talent of producing, whose research in the deepest catalogues of jazz and soul music offers moments of great auditive pleasure. His album “Eternal Development” is varied, fresh, without waste and completely faithful to a "made in Japan" style. To listen to tunes such as “Levitation”, “Maintain” or “Turn It Up” is such a candy, will offer to you this sweetened taste of a jazz or nu-soul tainted of electro music. Nevertheless and in spite of a tempting casting (J*Davey, M.E.D…), Grooveman Spot while showing a certain talent, will owe to dissociate from DJ Mitsu or Kentaro in order to bore.

“Hadesugiru” is without any doubt the best track of the album. A typical hip-hop atmosphear from the Nineties, reminding The Roots, a completely hypnotic tunne with a fantastic piano loop. And add the rocky voice of Count Bass D who has been for more than 10 years in hip-hop having an excellent reputation in the scene underground. One moment of pure pleasure!

Willie Williams - Keep On Moving (2007)

Allez ! On "continue de se remuer"!

A Studio One compilation released by the English label Soul Jazz Records is always a event. The legendary label of Sir Coxsone, birth place of reggae music, is a source which seems inexhaustible since it is about the 23th compilation of rare & unreleased tunes. After series dedicated to the tracks influenced by soul, ska or roots, place with the rub-a-dub style.

It is in the Seventies Clement Dodd aka Sir Coxsone, gave a new breath to his label, one speaks even about a rebirth when he set out again in finding new artists, some “fresh blood” ! It is thus the beginning of a news great period for Studio One where work famous figures drawn up such as Alton Ellis, Freddie McGregor and some promising young musicians and singers who will bore more or less quickly. It is the case of Willie Williams, Michigan & Smiley (already reviewed here) or Horace Andy who bring all a true freshness. Should I of course name Lone Ranger, one of the inventors of rub-a-dub which will give ragga music few years later. This time, Soul Jazz Records gives us a shandy of anthem with “My Conversation” of Cornell Campbell, “How Could You Leave” of Freddie McGregor, “Jah A The Creator” of Michigan & Smiley as well as rare tunes such as the magic “Natural Mystic” of Jennifer Lara or “Minister For Ganja” of Rapper Robert & Jim Brown. An almost essential compilation for those which like or wish to discover in jamaican music.

Willie Williams is a symbol of reggae dedicating 35 years of his life to the music full of successes (for example “Armagideon Time” which was revisited by The Clash). Much less known than Bob Marley, he worked with all best musicians, labels and singers (Jackie Mittoo, Burning Spear, Mighty Diamonds, Black Uhuru, The Wailers Band) and always crossed with success years and all stylistics evolutions. His track “Keep One Moving” is a typical rub-a-dub with a toast of MC and a riddim Slim Smith's “Answer” which I adore. Go ! All “Keeponmoving”!

Brother Ali - Truth Is (2007)

Brother Ali is a single figure in the landscape of the American MCs. Afro-American muslim and albino, Brother Ali is a purist full of honesty from another time, making staying alive a old-school hip-hop he is nowadays the leader.

I discovered him in 2004 when he released “Shadows In The Sun” which differed from all productions of that period through a freshness and a remarkable nostalgia. Brother Ali, his funky flow and his lyrics (enthralling according to the American discussions forums) found in the person of Ant, half of the duet Atmosthere, the ideal beatmaker thanks to his soul-jazz instrumentals from the Seventies. It is impatiently that I awaited a second volume on behalf of the hip-hop Eek-A-Mouse (both are albinos). It is the label Rhymesayers Entertainment which has just announced the launch in April of “The Undisputed Truth”. Always full of militancy, Brother Ali combines words (in his lyrics) and acts (a track in free dwnload on his myspace…). Ant is always at the production. I can't wait fo spring!

To give us a chance to be patient, Brother Ali has just released a first EP “Truth Is”. Vindicatory words, a cover I find splendid and a famous jamaican riddim revisited (Johnny Osbourne's “Truths & Rights”). All is gathered to be a success (I wish him !). What a frustration to wait for the other tunes!

VIDEO : Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes (2007)

Magnifique...

One year ago, a friend of mine showed me a 9.30 minutes short movie of Claude Lelouch, “C'était Un Rendez-Vous". The French moviemaker had just finished his movie “Si C'était à Refaire” and used the 9.30 minutes of films to concretize a project that he was due to him in heart. A film made in one shot where the movie camera would cross Paris at high speed, the glance of a man who leads as insane because he is late with a rendez-vous. In August, early in the morning, the driver (certainly professional rally driver) threads speedly in the districts, streets and avenues without worrying about red lights, cars and walkers. A public danger, a danger to him since this sequence was realized without the authorization of the police department, circulation is not at all under control and the visibility is near zero. Reality is as seizing as distressing with this camera fixed on the bumpers, the red loghts burned systematically and these streets ravelling at a terrifying speed.

A full risk for a sumptuous result. The spectator is plunged in this race which starts at the Place Dauphine to join the Place du Tertre. Transported in this Paris of 1976, I remindme stucking in the armchair full of shivers trying to press my foot on an imaginary brake. I had such a souvenir of it that to see it again in a recent music video for a track of the band Snow Patrol was a true pleasure. I must admit that “Open Your Eyes” seems to be composed expecially for this short-movie with a simple duet guitar-voice to start to which come to be added other guitars progressively, a bass and beats. More the video advances, more the tempo is up until to explode in full rise of the Butte Montmartre. A tune of tripping pop for a film which is as much tripping. Splendid…

Tolcha - Crushed Ice (2006)

Music is always living cycles which translates the appropriation of young artists from their hours of listening lengthened on the bed in their bedroom. It's like a reappartition of a cultural style, a geographical place as by enchantment through a generation which stole (or deserved) the witness.

Couple of years ago electro-dub scene resulting from Germany and Austria emerged. That memories when one arises the “KD Sessions” of Kruder & Dorfmeister, “Encounters” of the Sofa Surfers or the first album of Waldeck ! Today they are the Berliners of Tolcha who take again the torch with a “Gestalt” which sounds familiar as if it always was in your music library. Completely faithful (perhaps too), they offer the typical mix of electronic music, of dancehall full of reverb (“Bild Zeit” is in the dub line of Rhythm & Sound) with downtempo beats. “Ramming”, “Blessed” are excellent tunes with industrial sonorities, “Rising Tides” pointing out Roots Manuva. The featurings also illustrate this extremely pleasant revival side with Maxx (MC of the excellent Goats), Ras Tweed (MC of Overproof Soundsystem) or RQM (MC of the Sofa Surfers, who have multiplied the projects for the last few years). “Gestalt” is attracting thanks to these nice references without being filling with enthusiasm, Tolcha not exceeding them really.

“Crushed Ice” is according to me one of the headlights tracks where the dark environment points out the universe of Tricky. Hip-hop with a heavy electronics bassline, metal breaks and few “ from space” scratchs where the mixed flows of RQM and Sasha Perera (of the band Jahcoozi) add a welcome groove.
